I am looking to go on a road trip accross all states of Australia, stopping every now and then for tours etc. Kinda like a complete Australian holiday. I guess we would like to decide how long we will have off to include all of the things that we would like to do, but i just want to find out how long the drive alone would roughly take going from each state to state. Do you know where i could find this out??

That will be a real adventure. Allow at least three months for the trip. This will give you about a month for driving and about two months for touring. Spend a lot of time around the major cities, and allow plenty of time for beaches and wine tastings. Remember your sunscreen, and always carry enough water for several days if you go off the main roads. Talk with locals before you go on any tracks, and make sure you have reliable maps, a GPS device, and survival gear. Wish we could join you !!!

I did the whole of Australia, except Tasmania with my parents when I was younger (about 5 years ago). It took us 7 months to visit all of the states, and in all honesty it wasnt even close to being long enough to see everything.

Everywhere we went there was more worth seeing which we just didnt have time for.

So, yeah, you probably could do it in 3 months, but you wont see much. Id aim for a year if possible.

This link will allow you to put any to and from destination in Australia in and it will show you how many kilometres by road your trip would be. Example Sydney to Brisbane 929 km. It also shows time to travel the distance. Australia is about the same size as the lower 48 states of America. To see it all would be huge ask. I would recommend at least 4 weeks to do the trip properly.

Checkout a website called travelpod - it's free to register and then you can chat or e-mail people who have actually done the drive, or you could also read the journal/travelpages of the trip. It offers a massive amount of travel tips and provides links to car hire and accommodation etc

4 weeks? C'mon Kevin S, get real!! You wouldn't even see the east coast in that timeframe......

My parents did the same trip many years ago, it took them 18 months!!!!! That was a complete circumnavigation of Australia, plus the trip to Alice Springs / Uluru

I have not done this myself, but from what I have learnt and heard from people who have done it, you need at a minimum of THREE MONTHS. You won't see literally everything but you will see all of Australia and just about every place that worth visiting (with stops on the beaten track along the way)

try these sites:

http://www.travelmate.com.au/

You can plan your trip and have a rough idea the distance between points as well as other useful info.
