Having 4 sons, you would think I would know the answer, but my first two slept in the bed with my husband and I until they migrated to thier own beds around age 3. ( They still end up in our bed when morning comes.) Our third son, had many medical problems. He slept in his own crib, when he wasnt in the hospital. By 10 months old, he was shimmying up the rails and out of the crib. We moved him into our bed because we did not want him to fall over the rails and onto the floor. For about 10 mos after our fourth son was born, all of our children slept in our bed with daddy, and I nursed baby on the couch. Anyway, he has been in his crib now for 13 months, w/o a problem. Unlike his brothers, he sleeps great, and never cries when we put him in his crib. How much longer can I leave him in there? I assume until he gives me a reason to pack the crib away,(I.E. climbing out), or until I feel particularly ready to get up numerous times each night to put him back into his big boy bed???

We plan to have baby # 5 within a18 mos, o even though I do not want to rush him, I am wanting him to be in his own bed far before baby comes home, as not to take his bed away and give it to baby.

LOL! Ya'll are too cute! For the one who asked how can we have another child with so many kids in our bed: We sneak to another room once they are asleep, or we move them to thier own beds! LOL! For the other person who asked the size of our bed: Its nly a queen, but I dream of a California King! Also, our youngest is 23 mos. For the other Q- My husband makes pretty decent money. He owns his own business, and I homeschool our children. We have a super huge family who help out tremendously when needed. We also grow our own produce to cut back on bills. Plus, since we have all sons, they wear lots of hand me downs! I have to say, that we have been very blessed!

I would wait as long as possible to move him out. It sounds like you co-sleep anyway, so when will your new baby need the crib? Maybe you could set up a pack-n-play for the new baby for awhile. I would wait until the toddler is at least two. You could keep him in there longer, b/c that size mattress is okay for children up to 4 or 5 in toddler beds. Although I would not keep a child that age in a crib. I was just giving you information. I would definitely move him by the time you potty train him so he can get up to go potty.

We moved our son out of his crib when he was about 21 months old because his baby brother was born and needed a crib. Before that he could easily climb out of his crib, and often did in the morning. (He was agile enough that he never actually fell out.) Since then he's been in a "big boy bed" with a guard rail thing. A friend of mine, however, has twin 2 year olds (They'll be 3 this month.) and they are just in the process of being moved out of their cribs - they were happy there so why change? (Hope this isn't too forward, but how do you manage to have (almost) five children when your bed is full of little boys...?)

I am not sure how old your son is...sorry, but I think as long as their is some kind of protectiver barrier to prevent him from falling out, really anytime is fine. I've read that children under 2 don't undersand the concept of "staying put" but maybe try it now. If u do and it fails, at least you'll know he's not ready and you can give it a few more weeks and try again. Better to do that now then to wait longer and have to come close to the new baby coming. by the way, not that it's any of my business, but how on earth can u afford to have so many children? We have two and it's tight sometimes. I would LOVE to have a TON of children, but it's just not possible. (chuckle) Good luck, sounds like you're a GREAT mommy! :-)

Usually around 2 years old I think. Who am I though I have a 4 year old in my bed and he's been there since about 6 months old. Anyway usually at around 2 they start to learn how to climb and then they could get hurt.
Good Luck
