I found my stolen bike after almost 6 months. It needs a new chain and maybe a tune up. It also has some dents in the top tube, almost like someone nailed it with a hammer a couple times. They aren't real deep or anything just dented in a little.
Is that really bad or not that big of a deal?

I wouldn't exactly say it's a good thing. If I were you, I would ride it, but keep a close eye on the frame. Keep checking and make sure the dens don't get worse and that the frame doesn't get any cracks. It shouldn't' t be that big of a deal, but just inspect the bike more often. Oh get a bike lock. At the link is the best one I found. It even comes with anti-theft guarantee!

Hey, dents in an al frame are bad if you made them falling off!
I can tell you that Zac , my son had a bad dent in his down tube from a crash. It was wrinkled. He was able to ride for 3 to 4 months on it before it started to open up. Then it became a wall hanger. I would measure the dents will a micrometer, or a tape measure just as a reference. If after a couple of months you see no change I think you should be ok. You may want to remove the paint from the dented area to watch for a crack. Later you can repaint the affected area. Al is very resistent so it won't rust. Just remember do not use purple power or strong caustics on bare al. It will etch al. Mild detergents are ok. Stay away from products containing koh or naoh as a principle component.

In the top tube I wouldn't worry about it, that tube doesn't take much stress. Be sure to inspect the rest of the bike carefully, and keep an eye on those dents for anything that looks like a crack.

It should be ok depending upon how bad they are. But keep in mind that aluminum is a very brittle metal. Because dents disrupt the even distribution of stress on the frame, the frame will be more susceptible to stress fractures. Keep an eye on it over the next rides.

small superfical dents in the top tube are not a big problem for the integrity of the frame,s strength. if tyhe dents were bigger in such a way to cause rips or cracks in the frame you would have to tig weld the cracks so the bike does not tear apart.
