My fiancé and I have been engaged for over a year and still haven't sent a date. We love each other and feel married. He is definitely the love of my life, but the thought of the dress/ring and "i do" makes me ill... what does this mean? Any advice for this unmotivated bride to be?

You're not alone. My fiance and I have also been engaged for some time with no date set. I guess you need to ask your self WHY does the thought of the actual "I do" make you ill... the dress/ring are totally optional...your choice, but if the I DO part makes you queasy...is he the right guy for you?? Are your parents divorced? If they are and it wasn't pretty, maybe you're feeling nervous and scared as a result of that ... hey, there's no rush. If you're both happy...you'll know when and if it's the right time to tie that noose....I mean knot. :)

I marry many couples who have been living together and engaged seemingly forever. Some say the merging of their finances and buying a home together was a bigger commitment than the engagement. Some say they wanted everything financially secure before the wedding so they can work on a family next. Some say they each had some things to work out that may have gotten in the way had they rushed it, or that one was not ready and the other knew they would be eventually and just waited. Some even have kids already. These are the ones who do get married. My advice is ask yourself why you are unmotivated. It might mean that right now is not the best time, but you trust that when the time is right you will both know.

Trust your heart.

You don't have to have a big wedding, something small like a Justice of the Peace. And as for a ring, the only time I wear mine is for family functions and it doesn't bother my hubby of 26 years at all.

It doesn't have to mean anything really.
You are just not ready for the Big I Do.

I know a couple who have been engaged for the last 15 years, and they are happy as can be.

Sounds good to me. YOU live your life and be happy !

Just go to the Justice of the Peace at the Courthouse and get married.

Talk to your fiance about it.

Maybe you should consider a small, family only wedding. It could be done at your church with your pastor officiating, or at the courthouse with a judge officiating.

If you do that, you could maybe have a reception later on, if you'd like to.

Maybe you are just afraid of what the married life is like. Try talking to him about the date.

in my opinion the point of getting engaged is because you have a specific date and time to you get married. the engagement is sorta the kick off to that event. sounds like you just wants a ring for whatever reason. if you cant set a date, give back the ring untill your ready to set a date.

I AM SO WITH YOU ON THAT!! Half - fully HALF - of marriages fail in the first 7 years. For me, having that "foot out the door" gives me comfort. I know that if and when things turn south, I can LEAVE. Divorce is so messy, and yet so ... certain.
If you're only concerned about the wedding, I can dig that, too. Why do so many women get excited about it? I can't imagine anything more overwhelming and just plain boring - flowers, settings, invitations, dress, cake, photographer.... ugh. Leave it to the mother in law!!!!!
