I already know that it is QUITE painful. My fiancee suffers from Lupus and was just recently was hospitalized. Her sedmentation rate was elevated to 87 - which means she is in SERIOUS pain. The reason I ask this is because she just found out from work that someone was calling her a "baby" and that Lupus is nothing. I just want some people to reassure us that this isn't all in her head. Whoever your fiance works with should get a clue. They are ignorant and shoud use their brain and actually read up on what Lupus is and educate themselves alittle bit. I have had Lupus for several years now ( I am 29), and there are days during a flare up when I am in horrible pain. It can really depress you also because it limits the things you can do on a regular daily basis. There are some days my fiance needs to help me shower, dry my hair, get dressed...other days are so bad I can only get around by wheelchair. The pain is not in anyones head, this is a real disease, that can be life threatening if not taken care of properly. Just tell your fiance to ignore whoever made that stupid comment and focus on getting the word out there about Lupus. That is how people will have a better understanding of the disease, when it is known as well as Cancer, etc... The suprising thing is that more Americans have lupus than cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, sickle-cell anemia, and cystic fibrosis combined. That's a horrible thing for that person to say. Lupus can be excruciating, and your fiancee is not, BY ANY MEANS, a baby. Joint pain, migraines, chest pain, abdominal pain. You name the anatomy and I'll name something that can cause pain in a Lupus patient.
I think a large part of the problem with lupus and any other rheumatological disorder is that it is a young and primitive field and even the experts only know a little about the diseases and underlyng mechanisms.
Lupus is not nothing. It's a serious disease and shame on that person for suggesting such a thing!

Lupus can not only be painful depending on what havoc it chooses to cause during a particular flair but most people who have it are looked at as hypochondriacs because we usually look "healthy. " Both you and you girl friend should go to www.butyoudontlooksick.com and to webmd (who has a great support group for those with Lupus ). Tell her to cheer up and to ignore those who are stating their opinion where it is not wanted or needed. Lupus is a real disease and as long as she has a support system like you she will be fine.

Lupus from personal experience(my sister) is very painful. It (the disease) can mask itself as other diseases so it is difficult to diagnose. Prior to my sister's diagnoses she suffered from flu like systems, skin rashes and swollen/painful joints. She has suffered from seizures and we almost lost her twice. Please have your fiancee monitor her prednisone(I probably spelled it wrong) level and keep a list of the medications handy in case of an emergency. Hope that helps.
