I think you are worrying too much.
It has been a long time since I took the ASVAB, but when I did it was geared for high school graduates. If you have a decent GPA then you should score decently on the ASVAB. I took it once in ROTC and did well and then I took it again after a few years of College and almost aced it.
Now you will probably do better if you have a hobby that translates to a MOS (Military Occupational Specialty). I knew next to nothing about cars so I scored the lowest on the exam in that area, but I still could have gotten a job in that MOS if I wanted to.
High School is designed to give the lowest acceptable person a chance to graduate, almost everyone who doesn’t drop out of school early graduates. The AVSAB is designed to get a slightly better individual, but you don’t have to be college material to get into the Army.
The primary purpose of the ASVAB isn’t to filter people out though, it is designed as a skill assessment to determine which MOS the recruiter should offer you, based on what they have available and have a demand for. If you did well enough on your ACT or SAT to get into most colleges then you should do well enough on the ASVAB to be accepted. The test is looking for exactly those kind of people.
The more important question is what you want to do and which branch of the service do you want to go into. In my experience recruiters never lie, they just don’t tell you the whole truth. In their defense they can only tell you about their own experiences and if they don’t know your desired MOS then they only have what the books can tell them.
Why don’t you try emailing me via my Avatar and giving me some more information and your email address. Then I can tell you a little more. I served in the US Army for 8 years so I know the Army pretty well, I don’t know the rest of the services that well, but I do have an idea of what is required.
If you get into the sevice then don't worry about not knowing enough the military will handle that problem and if you pay attention in school and do what you are told then you should graduate with no problems. Don't worry so much that you do poorly on your ASVAB.

GT is General Technical. Anything around 100 is normal. 110+ is pretty good. 120+ is really good 130+ is excellent! Getting into a given MOS is based off of the GT score. If you got an 82, I'm guessing you got around a 115. But that's a guess. I've seen people achieve an overall 75 with a GT of 130. Likely, you'll be able to choose from whatever job you want. The GT score is what's really important. The AFQT is only important for getting into the military. EDIT: To bOmbs - I have a 132. A friend of mine achieved a 140 (which I didn't know was possible until he did it). Sorry if you were an ASVAB waiver.

The 4 main categories go to the make up of your "final score". the other areas of the test go to the areas of the military you have the aptitude to perform well in ie a high mechanical score you may be good in as a mechanic

my husband knows NOTHING about auto or mechanical stuff and he did VERY well on his ASVAB. Just study...theres a site you can go to that can help you practice for it. Talk to your recruiter. They can give your the website and that will help you out a lot. He did that like..3 times a day and did a lot better on his asvab than he did on his practice test!
good luck and thank you for supporting your country!

The only thing you really need to worry about is the 4 main subjects. It's not that hard of a test. The rest through common sense and reasoning will get you through.

No. Only the english and math count towards your final ASVAB score. The other areas you mentioned will sort out what kinds of jobs you may have a natural ability towards and thus help place you in the right kind of job field. You're not going to ace those sections but you will show what areas you're leaning towards as far skill sets go.

Yes it well in the skills technical and general skills area, do yourself a big favor, postpone taking the asvab until you have had time enough to purchase and study a book called, no offense, but its called ASVAB FOR DUMMIES, it costs twenty bucks, I bought it, studied it, and scored well enough for anything, with a raw score of 80, you should be able to pick it up at any good bookstore, good luck

It is not difficult to take the test as long as you know your basic subjects of which you mentioned already. The other subjects determine your technical job qualifications. Good Luck!

The reason for these components of the test are to identify people for the high tech jobs. Actually the questions are pretty easy. Don't sweat it. Good luck!
