The electron transport chain/process provides the energy for actively transport H+ (protons) across a membrane against the gradient.

Electron transport chain allows the energy of electrons to flow from protein to protein to be captured. Chemiosmosis uses this energy captured to produce a proton gradient by pumping hydrogen ions against the concentration gradient which can then be used for cellular work such as ATP synthesis.
