"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." (Matthew 19:24)

Surely if you have a computer and enough time to visit Yahoo Answers, then you would be judged rich by the standards of the times that this quote was originally written?

So as everyone here is not going "to enter into the kingdom of God." Why are there so many Christians here?

Is there a mistake with my Bible?

No mistake.
That's what it says... and so many elders of the church used to say that a lot.

Rich compared to what?
Americans are far more rich than Etheopians, does that mean no americans will go to heaven.. or just rich americans...
Do the homeless gat a free pass?

Good question!

Well, when you're have money and you're Christian, you should give a lot of it too the needy. When you're rich, it's more difficult to do that because you tend to be greedy and not many rich people are benevolent because they actually care. What the quote is saying is that it's difficult for a rich man to be caring and benevolent because he probably became rich by being ambitious, uncaring, and greedy in the first place. It's really the same way with people today. Alot of people consider themselves Christians, but how many people gave a man on the streets a sandwich? So many "Christians" are against immigrants coming into the country, but they don't do anything to help these immigrants have a better life back home. So, yeah, the quote is true and it's still applicable, though not all Christians follow it.

I think the verse means that NOBODY can enter the kingdom of God by his own merit. It is pointless to think you can. Nobody is good enough, wise enough, works hard enough to be good. Or,this:
For the last two centuries it has been common teaching in Sunday School that there is a gate in Jerusalem called the eye of the needle through which a camel could not pass unless it stooped and first had all its baggage first removed. After dark, when the main gates were shut, travelers or merchants would have to use this smaller gate, through which the camel could only enter unencumbered and crawling on its knees! Great sermon material, with the parallels of coming to God on our knees without all our baggage.

"It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God." (Matthew 19:24)

because a rich man will depend on his wealth and not want to surrender to God.

I must have something wrong with me because I don't understand your question. If your referring to the bible question there is a place in Israel where the only way that a camel can fit thru is to take off all of its gear get down on all fours and squeeze thru the hole, its a lot easier than a rich man giving up everything he/she has for the kingdom of God. I hope that this helps. Sorry if it doesn't

There is no mistake in what the Word is saying, it is the meaning of "eye of the needle".

The entry way into a city was a gate with an arch. A camel would frequently be required to enter on its knees, but more than likely would be required to be unloaded outside of the gate, passed through and reloaded

"It is easier for a camel to crawl under the gate opening than for a rich man to humble himself enough to enter the gates of heaven" would be a more proper restatement of God's Word.

No, this teaching is teaching us about ill gotten wealth. In these times at dark the main gates of the city closed and travelers had to enter into the city by a needle gate or small gate which was easily protected. The gate was big enough for a man to walk through but a camel had to be unloaded and then went through on its knees. Jesus was teaching us we must unload all of our ill gotten worldly gains. To enter into the kingdom of God we must enter only with the talents and gifts The Lord has given us.The conclusion you came up with is not what God is trying to teach us about; God is saying He will give you everything you need to accomplish the job planned if you will surrender to Him.

When Jesus said this He was speaking about Christians in the truest sense of the word--like monks. People can fully feel the blessings of the holy spirit if they give up all worldly pleasures and give themselves 100% to Christ, that is why it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle. For the rest of us there is maybe 1 hour a day of God time and church on Sundays. It doesn't mean people like that are not Christians, they just aren't die hard Christians who do nothing but worship God and preach to people. It would be nice to live like that but who could stand all the embarassment and lack of fun (and sex).

The eye of a needle, in ancient times, wasn't the eye of a needle that we think of today. I was taught the the eye of a needle in ancient times refered to a VERY small entrance that a camel could barley fit through when the gates of a city were closed. It's just saying that a rich man can be very prideful and let things get in his way, so it is hard for him to keep his life in perspective and view that that all his blessing come from God.

The Bible was written to reflect all ages. Being rich or poor is relative to the age in which we live. Having a computer in this day and age does not mean you are rich. The eye of the needle, I was taught , refers to a very narrow street in Jerusalem that a camel would have very great difficulty in passing thro. It wasn't impossible for this to happen, tho, just
that the camel would have to 'trim his figure' ( mend his ways ) to negotiate this street. It does not mean that all rich people are condemned to hell. How awful would that be?
