I know a five year old that has one. I personally cant find a reason for someone that age to have a cell phone. I cant even imagine a teenager really needing one, nonetheless a five year old. I also like big mama have an issue with this subject. It gets me going! Kids do not need cell phones!

I know kids as young at 5 that have them, but there those Disney ones that you can only call like your parents and 911 and that's it. Also you can track the kid if they have it on them. It has a gps tracking device with a monitor system that the parents/guardians hold. I think these are very good phones for young kids especially if you live in an area with high abductions and kid napping going on. Other wise I know my 11yr old niece has a phone that is strictly for calling mom dad or me or emergency they don't have a house phone so that's why. After seven P she can call friends if its only for a minute or two! I had a phone at 12 cuz I was on the road for hockey and my parents didn't want me stranded on a bus or with a group of kids, and no way to get help. SO i don't think having a phone at a young age is a bad idea if its controlled well!

My son just got his and he is 11. I did block all texting and downloading to prevent a huge cell phone bill. The primary reason was he walks home from the bus stop which is about a 1/4 mile really late in the afternoon. It is a safety issue!

My sister is 12 and has had a cell phone for about a year. No limits or anything on it. She is spoiled, I did not get a cell phone until I was 16.

I got a phone for my 8 yr old daughter, see has been very responsible with it. It is nice to know when she is with her grand mother or away from home she has a way to contact family, all the important numbers are on her phone. Even if we are shopping and she get separated somehow she can call immediately and we are re-united. I just added her to my family plan and I am very happy she has a phone.

My cousin who is only 6 has a phone that can text, send pics and of course make calls. He uses it a lot to call his friends and sometimes our family. My uncle is very rich and spoils his kids rotten. (and rotten they are!)

I'm sorry but this is an issue for me. I don't think kids need cell phones. They need to interact with others other ways. Also they are so darn expensive.
I would say about 16 or so and they have limits and have to help with the bill.
I'm sorry but that is the way I feel.
