Nike goes back to the 1960's in Oregon. Bill Bowerman, a legendary track coach, and Phil Knight got together to design a better track shoe. A waffle iron may have been used in the process of developing a new style of bottom. They came up with Blue Ribbon Sports, which later became Nike.

Adidas is a German company, I believe. The founder was a guy named Adi Dassler, so you can tell where the name of the company came from. His brother, by the way, started Puma.
