a person who dies for their faith.
like Cassie Bernall at the Columbine shooting. A gun was pointed to her head and the gun man asked if she believed in Christ. When she said yes, he shot her. She died because of her faith.
a martyr could be in any religion though.

Teri remember this .[ When is the last time you saw a Catholic actually reading a bible?
They were told that they were too dumb to understand it for so long that they might have begun to believe that lie too.]
My reaction was to this above......... now let it go Teri.....your answer above hasn't changed .......jealousy will get you no where..!!!!!!!!!
During the Reformation, did the Protestants "re-evaluate" all the deutero-canonical and apocryphal Christian writings such as the Gospel of St. James, the Acts of St. Paul, the Apocalypse of St. Peter, the Gospel of St. Mary Magdalene, the Gospel of St. Thomas and the myriad of other writings from the first and second centuries of the Christianity? No. The Protestants accepted the New Testament as defined by the Catholic Church in the late 4th century. Why accept the Canon as defined and preserved by the Catholic Church yet not accept the other teachings of this same Church?

A martyr is someone who dies for their beliefs or cause. There are many examples of people who did that, both for religous causes and non-religious ones. Samurai, the Salonica dynamiters, crusaders, mujahideen, etc.
Many religious people see it as a way of devotion, if not the highest possible way of devotion and sacrifice.
Note to the above person, suicide bombers claim to be doing it for martyrdom, but many Muslim scholars consider it a sin that God is not going to accept on Judgement day. Furthermore, Islam says that the first man to be sent to hell will be a man who died fighting a war for his own pride and gain and not for his religion like he claimed.

Martyrs were the ones that the Emperor Constantine who made himself pope and ruler, who killed his eldest son, his first wife and all of the ones on earth at the time who didn't want to obied by his rules of having everyone become a catholic, which in reality, and at the risk of being stoned to death, will admit, never had any of the basics of what true Christianity was all about. The leaders of that religion have been murdering true Christians throughout the ages and still do whenever they get the opportunity to do so... Holy wars, they call them when it's not outright "murder". Their victims are the only true "martyrs" and the true God is my witness who pleads with all of us to "get out of her my people!!!! if you do not want to share in her sins and do not want to receive parts of her plagues.... Revelation 18:4

A martyr is someone who is innocent of any crime but is put to death or dies because of their faith and beliefs.
Sir Thomas Moore is a good example. He would not give his approval of the King's divorce because it was against the Church and against God. The King made a decree that everyone had to sign, in which he made the King the head of the Church. Moore would not sign it...and was beheaded. He was a martyr because he would not comprimise his beliefs.

A martyr is someone who dies for their faith in Chritianity.
For example, St. Paul, who converted to Christianity and spent his entire life converting people and preaching the good news of Jesus our Savior, was killed because the Romans and the temple priests did not like how he was preaching about Jesus. He was put to death because of his faith. He is an example of a martyr.
If someone shoots you or kills you because of your faith or belief in Christ, then you are a martyr, my friend.

Someone who dies needlessly for an ideology or cause. Like a hippie tree-hugger that gets smashed by a bulldozer after chaining themselves to a tree.
Also used to define the 2,000+ Americans that have died in Iraq for Bush's agenda.

My definition of a martyr is a person who suffers and dies for their beliefs, or a person who does not suffer, but still dies for their beliefs.
