If there was anything else we must do to be saved besides accept Christ' forgiveness then His work on the cross wasn't enough and we would be saved by works and faith. This doesn't match up with Scripture (Ephesians 2:8,9; 1 Peter 1:3-5).

I believe that we are saved by grace alone- but once we are saved we are to do good works that God had in His mind for us to do from before the foundation of the world.
Ephesians 2:8-10 says it best-
8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
Works prior to salvation does not earn us salvation. Good works after being saved by grace is and should be done out of gratitude for what He has done.

Ephesians 2:8-9 is very clear... "...by Grace.......not by works"
James 2:24 speaks of Justification not Salvation... When one is Saved one will seek to do according to God's Word and Will... and that is to do unto others.. to spread the Good News... take care of widows and orphans and all else that is included in the commandment to "love thy neighbor as thyself." That is where the "works"come in....after Salvation not before... a careful reading of James will show this... in context with all of the teaching of Christ... not just mis interpreting one verse.
I did not know The Bible on the day of my Salvation... I had not done any "good works"... I did not know about the "doctrine" of Eternal Salvation.... All I knew is what God promised me in the instant of my Salvation... My Salvation is by Grace alone... and my salvation is eternally Secure... that is God's promise to me.... I then went on to begin to read His Word... and nothing I have read in His Word in the 7 years since I received my Salvation has contradicted one Word God gave me on that day.
By Grace was I saved, not by works.... I can not boast... I was, and am, unworthy of any thing from God... it is only because Jesus The Christ paid my sin debt that I had the right to come to God.... and it is only His Grace that Saved me.

I am saved by grace. But if that were all that I depended upon and did nothing else with the wonderful gift of salvation given - what have I personally done with that wonderful gift given to me?
See, I could quote all sorts of verses where grace is the topic and claim that such was indeed 'proof'. - BUT - then I would also have to ignore the other portions within scripture that show that such an approach is FAR from what is within scripture.
Relationship with God is not like a buffet where one gets to pick out certain portions of scripture and ignore the ones that have nothing to do with the total focus upon a small portion of scripture.
Should one ignore the portion of scripture where it states:
Jam 2:18 _But_ someone will say, "_You_ have faith and _I_ have works." [But I say], "Show to me your faith [apart] from your works, and _I_ will show to you my faith by means of my works."
Jam 2:19 _You_ believe [or, are convinced] that God is one; you do well. The demons also believe-and they shudder [with fear]!
Jam 2:20 But are you willing to recognize, O empty [fig., foolish] person, that such faith without such works is dead? (Analytical-Literal Translation)
or how about these scriptures:
Mat 7:21 "Not every one saying to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter into the kingdom of the heavens, _but_ the one doing the will of My Father, the [One] in [the] heavens.
Mat 18:3 and said, "Positively, I say to you*, unless you* are turned around [fig., changed inwardly] and become like such young children, by no means shall you* enter into the kingdom of the heavens.
Mat 18:4 "Therefore, whoever will humble himself like this young child, he is the greatest in the kingdom of the heavens.
Mat 18:5 "And whoever receives one such child in My name, receives Me.
Mat 18:6 "And whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble [fig., to sin], it [would be] better for him that a millstone of a donkey [fig., a huge millstone] be hanged on his neck, and he be drowned in the depth of the sea.
Mat 18:7 "How horrible it will be to the world because of the stumbling-blocks [fig., the things that cause people to sin]! For it is a necessity [for] the stumbling-blocks to come; nevertheless, how horrible it will be to that person through whom the stumbling-block comes!
Jam 1:26 If anyone thinks to be religious among you*, [and yet] does not bridle [fig., control] his tongue _but_ deceives his heart [fig., inner self, and throughout book], the religion of this one [is] useless.
Jam 1:27 Pure and undefiled religion before [our] God and Father is this: to be caring for orphans and widows in their affliction [and] to be keeping oneself unspotted [fig., uncorrupted] by the world.
Relationship with God is just that - a relationship. It is not a one sided arrangement with the one doing all and us having nothing to do. We, Christians, have a part to play in that relationship with God. We are to follow the example given and seen within scripture.
Without grace - none of it possible. But it doesn't end there - that is just the beginning.
