I am a CA resident, but I went to school in HI almost the whole last year and had my only incomes from HI. Do I file tax return for both states or just HI? Please let me know, thanks

You'd file in both - CA because you're a resident there, and HI because you worked there.

If you are still a legal CA resident, then yes, you will need to file a return in both CA and HI.

Most likely you would need to file a non-resident income tax return for Hawaii because that was the location of your source of income. As a California resident you may need to file a resident return listing your income as from a non-California source and list a creedit for any tax paid to another jurisdiction (Hawaii). Do the Hawaii income tax return first.

I have a similar situation because I live in NJ and my income is from New York. I do the federal return first, then non-resident NY state (source of income) and then resident New Jersey last.
