I have a friend who gave up carbs and worked out a ton and in a week lost 7lbs. He ate almost only chicken, lean steak, and protein shakes. I'm pretty sure that he lost this much just because it was his first week. Most of what he lost was water weight. I don't know about the long term.
I think that men tend to do better with the protein diets. You need to pay attention to what kinds of proteins you're eating. You can't eat just fatty red meats, you have to eat a lot of lean meats (ie chicken, fish).
Really, with any diet, you have to excercise for anything to work.

Benefits, Achieve. Just correcting your spelling. OK anyway, the benefits of a protein diet is that you lose weight really fast. The negatives are that if you only eat things like red meat, eggs, bacon and the like your cholesterol will skyrocket. However if you eat things like fish, nuts and turkey you will have better results. I lost 15 lbs in 2 weeks just by protein and vegetables. For breakfast I ate a fruit - usually an apple. For lunch I had chicken breast and a vegetable. For dinner I had the same thing. Lost 15lbs in 2 weeks. However, everyone is different, and I don't know how healthy you are so you might want to consult a physician before you follow a diet plan. Be careful, protein diets can be harmful if not followed correctly.

The key is it keeps your blood sugar level constant. Therefore no highs and low during the day. Pancreas is not pumping insulin all day to lower blood sugar. Blood sugar is stored in your fat cells. Benefit is you lose weight and feel good and not hungry all the time while you're doing it.
PS: Just keep the protein low fat, soy protein drinks & mixes are a good way to start, just drink one in the morning and you will get off to a good start to your day. Chicken breast with some beans or peas for lunch and a salad with some tuna or other fish for dinner or supper (depends on where you're from) and a cup of fat free, sugar free yogurt for a snack or two and you're on your way. Good Luck, CottonPatch

The benefits of a protein diet is that you get protein. Never mind that it's too much protein for your body, and creates keratosis, which can be quite bad for you.
Try a BALANCED diet of 30% fat (the good kind), 30% protein, and 40% carbohydrate. That and exercise will be very good for you.
Lots of veggies--in particular green leafy vegetables (sautee them, put them in soups, eat them in salads, and put them on sandwiches made with whole grains).
Lots of fruit (fruit smoothies are my favorite, with banana, peaches, strawberries, yogurt, lemon juice [1/2 of a lemon will do], orange juice, mango juice, and guava juice--blend well, add protein powder, and enjoy!), egg whites, fresh fish, and limited chicken, lamb, pork and beef.
Mix it up and look for recipes on-line. You'll never have the same meal twice, that way, and you'll get healthier.
Enjoy!
