I can't remember how much a postcard costs, but a letter costs 85 cents. I know because I'm American and live in Italy and am constantly sending letters home.

I disagree above answer that's valid for the letters.
To send a postcard from Italy to the USA the current cost of the stamp is € 0,65.

Alas, it seems English version does not list shipping cost from Italy to outside....

Anyway, USA is "Zone 2", so:

Posta Prioritaria 0.85 €
Raccomandata 3.65 €
up to 20 grams

Posta Prioritaria 1,50 €
Raccomandata 4,30 €
up to 50 grams

Posta Prioritaria (priority mail): Poste Italiane's fast domestic and international service.

Posta Raccomandata (registered mail): Poste Italiane's product having legal, certification validity and providing additional services, such as advice of delivery and C.O.D. (cash-on-delivery).

Posta Assicurata (insured mail): Poste Italiane's product allowing to insure items.

EDIT

well, martox, actually it's twenty years or so that postcard and letter costs are absolutely the same!
But I realize you're right, after all, since for some reason Poste site seems not to list "normal" mail (non-priority), when actually this option does still exists. And a "normal" letter does actually cost 0,65, as well...
I wonder why Poste lack this information, but just now their site is down for maintenance...
