No, although if you want to be an attention-seeking idiot then cutting yourself is the way to go.
Emo, like almost every other subculture, has become nothing more than a clothing style and a taste in music.

whats with this whole thing on being emo? everyone is emo in their own way. you know what emo stands for? emotional and at certain times everyone can be emotional. All in all I'd say emo is just a "style" now which is on the border line of being goth but isn't scary. You don't have to cut yourself to be emo, thats just a stupid thing to do to harm yourself.

the first time i ever heard about emo was in 1999. i would suggest not starting a dangerous and extremely horrible addiction (it IS an addiction) to fit into a teenage subculture that is already played out. the best thing you can do it be yourself and do whatever you can do to further your intellectual and creative pursuits without being self-destructive. cutting is a bad idea. learn to play an instrument instead and become a rock star! if you have emotional problems, therapy is a great help.

aggg, NO. that is the most reduiculous stereotype ever. thats like saying (although this is worst) you have to kill people if your black (EXAMPLE). if someone cuts themselves its for attention and their not emo. its all about the music. oh and if you dont listen to emo music than your also not emo.

no . . thats just sorta stereotypical. emo is a choice that one makes. clothing style & taste in different music, which IS called emo.

No you don't have to, and from me it isn't recommended. Just dress in dark clothes and remember emo means emotional, if your heartless we might need some work
