I am currently relocating and moving in with a room mate, and the room I am moving into is where his 2 cats were hanging out in. Since my son is moving with me and he and I will be sleeping in the same room, and he has a sensitive allergy to cats, how to help get rid of the cat's dander. I know vaccuming will help, and dusting...but what if I get the carpets shampooed. Can someone please help me please! I don't want my child to suffer. Also are there paticular things I should look for. Fleas, and such. I know they are indoor cats.

Thanks in advance!

It depends on how sensitive his allergies are. I would do the following.

1) Get the carpets shampooed. Or you can spread Arm and Hammer pet deodorizer or use that allergy spray for dust mites, etc. Then vacuum.

2) Keep the pets out of the room

3) Use HEPA type air filters in the heating and air system. You can buy them at Wal-Mart. Look for the ones that have pet dander control.

4) Consider buying a HEPA or HEPA type air purifier for the room. You can get a small one for about $100.

5) Buy some allergy covers for the pillow cases and mattress. Again, you can get these at Wal-Mart. They are plastic and help to control dander and dust mites.

6) Your roommate can help by brushing the cats regularly. Make sure they don't get in your son's face or lick him.

7) If you son is old enough, you might discuss allergy medication with his doctor.

Yes, shampoo the carpets. And wash the curtains and blinds: You would be surprised at what cat fur can get into.

There probably won't be any fleas, if the cats don't go out. But if any do show up, your room mate will have to get the cats treated promptly. And the entire house will have to be sprinkled with Borax or something similar, then vacuumed after about 20 minutes. And vacuumed every day to get up new fleas and flea eggs.

While you're vacuuming and making the room ready for your son, get someone to help you move the furniture and wipe down the walls and trim.

Good luck!

I have mild allergies to my cats dander. You might want to consider confining the cat to certain rooms that your mother and brother don't frequent. In addition vacuum any area your cat spends a fair amount of time, this includes her bed. Try to vacuum daily or every other day. Also brush your cat thoroughly every day without fail. My cats do not like water, so I bought an allergy reducer at my local pet supply store. Once a week I wet a cloth with the allergy reducer and rub it all over my cats until there fur is pretty damp. Then I rub a dry clean cloth until they feel dry. It seems to have helped quite a bit. Don't forget to use a lint brush on your own clothing. I carry cat hair everywhere I go. Cat dander is dried saliva left over from the cat grooming herself, you cannot totally get rid of it.

Get rid of the cats, and the dander will follow. There is NOTHING else in this world that will work. I've even tried loading the room with air filters and my allergies just won't stop. If you care about your son, ditch the felines.
