That is not true at all. If you need a filling it means you have tooth decay. If you do not get the filling you will lose that tooth for sure over time. I have fillings that have been there for YEARS! If it is properly placed it will last a LONG time. You do need to get it restored before you get a toothache though or then you are looking at a root canal or possible extraction anyway! Good Luck! It's really not that bad.

Absolutely false. In fact just the opposite is true.
I am assumeing that you need the filling due to a cavity. The cavity is an attack of jerms and enzymes againstyour tooth now. If you don't get the filling you keep the surface exposed to more damage and within 6 months you will loose the tooth.

Lets put it this way... if you don't get the tooth filled, then for sure it will fall out in the future and that is not talking about any pain you may have while it is falling out.

Well, we can all tell what your boyfriends mouth must look like. Jeez, he's not the person you need dental advice from at all, hon. Get the tooth fixed. It's not going to make your tooth fall out. Leaving cavities alone, not filling them, will cause damage to your tooth and your heart valves, too. Your mouth needs to be taken care of, so please go to your appointment and keep all future dental appointments.

Don't listen to your boyfriend. A filling will, if properly implanted, will last a lifetime. All new fillings are made with a type of material that is not toxic or carcinogenic as they were in the past. It will work as well as the previous portion of tooth, prior to the decay.

I am a dental student and I will try to answer your question, according to the literature I've read and lecture notes I have. "Mercury" fillings are Amalgam fillings. These are usually composed of 40-50% mercury. These fillings give off mercury vapor, which depends on the number of amalgam fillings you have, grinding teeth, etc. Mercury vapor may be inhaled, enter the bloodstream, and carried throughout the body. However, any mercury from amalgam fillings we swallow is very poorly absorbed and little enters our bloodstream. So, I would not think this would be a concern (*). But you may want to speak to your dentist or physician and get their advice, since I don't know your personal medical history. Hope this helps. [* This is my opinion from research literature and lecture notes. This reply does not establish a doctor-patient relationship and does not constitute medical advice. Patient should discuss their situation with their physician, who is aware of their medical history.]

Noooo, that's not true. If you don't get it filled it will rot away and hurt and you'll have to have it pulled. I've had fillings in my teeth that have lasted me 30 years.
