my living room windows and bedroom windows face a high traffic area. the traffic noise is sometimes so loud to even get a good nights rest or even enjoy television. what is the best way to muffle the sound through my windows or even sound proof the windows without spending too much money?

There are sound dampening drapes.......they are heavy and foam backed. You must make sure they cover the entire window and around the sides to the wall. Motels use them. Single pane glass is awful for sound. Double and triple panes are better, but that's big money. You could take 3/4" solid insulation panels and cut to window side and slide them in at night. Must be a good tight fit, too much play will allow the sound in.

Some kind of insulation. Whether it's double paned windows (expensive) or insulated curtains (cheaper) depends on the amount and type of noise. I tried both. They work. Double paned windows seal out higher pitched noises like honking and engines, but the curtains seal out the deisels and motorcycles better.

Take the windows out and wall it in. You'll also save money on heating and AC.
