Well email opens up a whole new realm to shy people. That is certainly a good idea.
Maybe even simple things like smiling at this guy in class will get his attention and you can start a conversation. Just think...if you do nothing, then you will never get close to this guy, now is that what you want? Just try to open up a little. It will probably be worth it. i'm really shy too. once when i liked this guy i got his # & had it for like a month before i decided to call him...i made the first call have a purpose and i asked him to help me solve a personal problem (he didn't even ask how i got his #) then he called me and we talked as frens 4 a while until it developed into a great relationship.

don't let ur 'personal problem' be anything that'll turn him off like a rash....gross

Try something subtle like smiling or making eye contact with him even if its just for a couple seconds, don't worry if you blush. In my experience, guys think its cute. Or if you want to go a little more boldly about it tell a friend that he's friends with that you think hes cute. Chances are, word will get around fast and if he likes you back he'll act on it. Well, you give him a call and tell him you are wanting to go and see this certain movie really bad but don't want to go alone and your girlfriend already has plans, would he by chance wanna go?? Oh and the movie..make sure its not a chic flik!! Make sure its something u both can enjoy!! Have fun at the movies!! Oh just in case he really can't go for some reason just say oh darn i was hoping you could go..thanks anyway.. I'll give John a call to see if he'll go oh and by the way. you have my number so call me sometime....If he's interested he will call!!

umm try to learn to not be shy...
and whatever you do, dont make a friend be the one that tells him "(you) really likes you, she's wondering if you would go out with her sometime"... this is a huge turn off.. happened to me twice, and i rejected them both because honestly, if she doesnt have the guts to tell me in person, why start something at all. I believe if she really did like me, she wouldve found the confidence in herself to tell me that in person otherwise i think shes just living in a crazy world in her mind.

learn subtle flirting
and learn to just ask him lots of questions
he'll be flattered that you're so interested in him
while you're asking all those questions, just keep subtly flirting with him
just search "flirting" on Google
all the stuff coming up about looking them in the eyes and smilling will be subtly flirting
