If you really want to ruin your transmission, then just shift down to 4th (feel the car jerk you foward), then do the same for 3rd, then 2nd. Fast foot work and getting use to slamming your friends heads into your headrest or dash.

Yes, you can downshift from 5th to 3d. Just make sure that you let the clutch come easy as the transmission reconnects. The RPMs may sore if you're still going too fast. You kinda have to get a feel for it and listen to the sound of the engine. ... and don't do 3d to 1st lol. I don't know what kind of car you drive or the size of your engine, but I can do 55 mph in 5th gear and the engine will sound a little sluggish and the rpm will be at 3 K (which is a bit low). If I downshift into 3d at 55 mph, the rpm will rise to about 5K and that's with a 3 Liter engine.

Depending on the car, truck or suv your driving depends on when to downshift. Downshifting from overdrive or 5th gear to 4th gear can be done at any speed, from 4th to 3rd usually about 45mph. 3rd to 2nd around 22mph, and 2nd-1st about 15mph or lower. Hope this helps.

Simplest answer is don't - which do you want to ruin first? A $60 pair of brake pads or a $2000 transmission? Let the brakes do the work.

I tried to give you a detailed response in on of your "Manual Car question...I wanna learn stick shift?", then I've been reading all your other questions, basically the same kind of stuff. Find someone who can give you some hands on training, and answer your questions as they come up.
