I think you can see by the different answers that everyone has a different pain tolerance. Also depends on size and if it's color or black (color means the artist will be poking around on the same area that has already been poked sometimes, and that can be more painful).
I have a piece that goes all the way across my lower back - hip to hip. I am a very small, boney person, so the closer to the spine he got, the more it hurt.
This last weekend my full back piece was finished. The tree trunk goes right up the spine - trust me, directly on the spine it does not go numb after a while. Childbirth breathing came in handy! That was a 3 hour sitting - (and that was the fill in - the outline was weeks before). I'm sure you aren't planning one that big, so just grit your teeth and bear it. Don't pick tattoo placement because you are afraid of pain. You should know what you want and exactly where you want it before you ever consider having it done.
Nothing is unbearable. And you can always tell your artist you need a break.

Ok, you want to know if it will hurt. There are lots of people who say it hurts like a you know what, and others that say different. Me personally, it was actually kinda fun, if you know what I mean (lower back is a g-spot). I have been tattooed on my legs, arms, back, neck, back of the head, and pelvis. The only tattoo I had that hurt was the garter belt around my thigh, the back side is REALLY tender.
Anyhow, the reason for the different answers is because every ones pain threshold is different. Some people break out into crying fits over paper cuts, others can have a bone sticking out and they are not going to even wine. My hubby says I have an ungodly high threshold of pain tolerance.
Here is another thing to keep in mind, the pain is only temporary, and when it is gone you have a beautiful work of art to show for.
A tattoo, no matter where it is is going to hurt, the only question is how much, and like I said, that depends. The one I have on my ankle hurt ALOT more the my lower back did, and I am going to tell you this, my ankle didn't hurt all that much.
If you are that afraid of the pain, my suggestion to you is to do one of two things. Either get something small that can be later added to, or don't get one.
And for the lady who made mention of diseases, NO REPUTABLE tattoo studio reuses needles!!! It is more cost efficient, safer, and more sterile to use new all the time then the clean, sterilize, and reuse needles. I am not sure who told you that tattoo artists did that, but who ever it was, well they were messing with you.

Yes, it hurts more, because it is right over your spinal cord. You might want to rethink about the area where you want to do it - do something more original... the small of the back is soooo O-L-D... seriously.
Also, it can be sexier, if you try an area that would surprise others... ex: on the hip, inside the ankle, or inside the arm (upper or lower) is more uncommon - especially for a girl. It would be more attractive. Even on the back of your shoulder would be prettier.
Also, the bigger the tattoo, the longer it takes - and the longer it takes, it will become numb - not hurting so much.

Lower back tattoos... aka "tramp stamps" do not hurt.. at all I have mine.. And I had mine done right after I got released from my Chiropractor from a herniated disc (which is right where my tattoo went)
It being over your spinal cord is NOTHING.. Your spinal cord is actually located with in your spine...So its not going to interfere with that. Or if you get an epideral later in life
If you can bear the pain on ur ankle. You'll probably be able to take it on ur lower back. Although it's going to take more then 5minutes...

I have a lower back tattoo and it was more painful than my ankle but it also took alot longer too. Mine was 4 1/2 hours long and he kept going over the spots repeatedly...It all depends on your pain tolerance and how big of a tattoo you want. If you had a five minute tattoo and you felt that that was alot of pain you might want to rethink a back tattoo because you really shouldn't get one unless you are willing to do one that has a good sized design on it and detail...

I got one across the length of my lower back and it hurt like the dickens. I had to go into a meditative state to take my mind off of the pain. People were talking to me in the tattoo parlor and I justed tuned them out. About half-way through I wanted to ask the artist to stop, but I'm glad I didn't because my tat is smoking!

I have one on the right side of my lower back and it hurt. a lot. but not as much as i was expecting. it took about 45 minutes and it wasn't excruciating but it was my first one and i was really lucky to have a very patient artist that let me take a break for about thirty seconds whenever i needed to. it hurt but was not unbearable at all. it was totally worth it.

Depends on the person, and every single inch of your body is a different feeling when it comes to tatts but if you felt that way about the ankle i would imagine it would hurt just as bad on you if not more. I still think you should suck it up and deal with the pain after your done with the tatt its done.
Go for it!!

I have a tiger on my shoulder and I also have a tribal design with nan and grandad at the bottom of my back and when I had the one done on my shoulder it went numb half way through the him doing it but when I had the one done at the bottom of my back I thought I wouldn't feel it half way through because it would go numb, well I thought wrong it hurt all the way through the design only because it's near your spine, I was nearly crying because it hurt but instead of crying I was biting my arm that much I left bruises, that's how much it hurt!

If you are doing this to fit in DONT. I got mine way back in 1996 before everyone in the world got one, and I still love it, but it is embarrising to show because of the nicknames given to it!!
So, rethink your location, if not, yes it hurts! It does feel almost annoying and when the artist gets to a spot that hasn't been touched for a while, it hurts, then gets annoying again.
So, Good Luck with this one!
