Where the chain connects to the back tire, it spins. Sometimes it will peddal and move the bike, then the other times it will spin freely.

You either have a freehub that is very "gunked" up or just plain shot. Try some degreaser in the spocket area and see what happens. I suspect you will need a new freehub though.

Yup, the other guys are right, you got yerself a fried freewheel. Not quite Crispy-fried, more like original-recipe-fried.

I wouldn't worry about trying to fix it. Just take it to a shop and get a new one put on. They're cheap, and it'll be guaranteed.

Your bicycle needs lubrication with a fine grade oil. 'Sticky' oil will only worsen this problem. there is a possibility you will have to wash this mechanism out with gasoline but if you do this remove the tire first as petroleum destroys rubber.

sounds like your freewheel (hub) is gone
take it to your local bike shop for a rebuild or a replacement
