Calzaghe is only as good as he is because his level of competition is nowhere near the likes of the fighters of the 80's. Hearns has been in wars with Leonard, Hagler, Duran(kind of), and Benitez. He has the experience and the talent to demolish Calzaghe. Hearns would have an edge in power. Calzaghe would have the edge in speed and stamina.
I think the early rounds will go in Calzaghe's favor before Hearns heats up and starts landing his tremendous right hand. I see all the rounds after the early rounds going to Hearns until he knocks Calzaghe out with a straight right hand flush on the jaw. Calzaghe's somewhat cautious style of fighting would not be tolerated by the vicious fighters of the 80's, especially not the "Hitman." Hearns via KO in the 9th round.

Thomas Hearns could have been thoroughly greater to Joe Calzaghe in each comparable appreciate. Hearns might actually weigh down Joe, the photos that Jones and Hopkins landed to knock Joe down with could have been deadly if Tommy landed them, and given the flexibility point of the two adult males, i in my opinion will not be able to be certain Calzaghe triumphing a around against a important Hearns, the two way, slugging or boxing Joe may well be in far extra than his head. Hearns wins particularly.

This is a great fuc*in' question.
I'm starting to like Calzaghe more and more. He's a bad motherfuc*er. An all time great? Maybe.
Against Hearns? This is a tougher fight for the Hitman than people think. Calzaghe is a leftie, can box and punch, plus he's a naturally bigger man than Hearns.
I think Blogbaba nailed it in his assessment that the key behind this fight would've been Calzaghe's ability to pressure (or not pressure) Hearns.
At some point he would probably have run into a Hearns right hand, and, bigger man or not - lights out.

Good question Brent! Calzaghe is a talented fighter but not nearly as talented as The Hitman. Thomas Hearns had a great jab and pulverizing power too and a true all time great. I believe that Hearns would have jabbed and jabbed Joe throughout this bout and would land an occasional hard right hand that would shake Calzaghe. At the end of 12 rounds of a lopsided fight, Hearns hand is raised in victory.

I was born in Detroit, still live in the area, and followed Tommy his entire career. I almost wish I didn't quit writing in the third person, I would have had a field day with this one. Calzaghe wouldn't have been able to pressure Hearns, he would have got his head taken off by a right hand if he tried. Hearns had the skills to out box Calzaghe, but wouldn't have needed to, because this one would have ended pretty quick with another KO victory for Hearns and some humility for British boxing fans.

Of course British fans are going to say Calzaghe is an all time great, thats biased. And bull ****. He's good but The Hitman would defiently take this one. Really i don't think theres too many boxers nowadays that you can compare to the fighters from the old days.

thomas hearns...i dont think joe could take the power packed right hand punch of the hitman...you dont brawl with hearns look what happened to duran...calzaghe is no leonard and the draw outcome of hearns-leonard rematch was a joke..it was hearns domination..

Calzaghe is currently my favourite fighter, Hearns is probably my favourite american boxer of all time both these fighters have faults but are just great to watch. Hearns was best at light middleweight but i think he still has enough at supermiddleweight to beat Calzaghe.
