I'm interested in persuing a career in Personal Training, but I am told its very hard to survive doing it.. I have about 5 years of personal experiance under my belt and within those 5 years, alot of people/friends learned to respect my knowledge and ask me for advice. I am going to be getting certified through NESTA, and work for a gym, either Ballys or NYSC most likely.. But is it possible to make a good living doing this? Im guessing to do that you need to go independtly after you've built up a clientel list.. Do most people open up a private gym ? If so whats the adverage startup cost on that.. or do most people pay a fee and use a local gym to being clients there? Any info is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

most the trainers I know work for Ballys, Living Well Lady etc
very few of them start their own gym, I think they are scared of the competition, not being able to find the clientel etc.

It is very possible to make a good living out of this, if you know what ur doing and you treat ur customers well, make them feel well and most of all make them feel healthy
you willl have a lot of word of mouth going around and soon or later ull be flooded w/ customers

good luck

There are many different techniques used. It has little to do with the fact they are Schutzhund or PPD dogs, it is simply that these types of dogs require a lot of basic training first. Anyone can have a dog that behaves like that without the actual protection training. Many use a combination of postive reinforcement to teach behaviors and add in corrections once the behavior is learned. Here, the Police dogs are trained that way. Their reward for everything from a good obedience session, to a good track to a good "out" is a tug toy. The toy is a reward as is the interaction with the handler. But it is also important that the dog learn consequences, and there is a place for corrections as well. I am sure there are others with better explainations. @ the first person, Schutzhund is a protection sport, not a mixed breed. Add - the other key is the consistant training these types of dogs go through. They are always doing training sessions. ------------- Schutzhund is not even close to the same a personal protection. The protection phase of Schutzhund is very structured. A sleeve is always used, the bite is only the sleeve. In PPD training, getting the dog used to as many possible scenerios is very important. It is also important they don't become fixated on the sleeve. Training that is important. Many dogs will not bite someone without a sleeve if not properly trained. Corrections depend on the dog, they can be anything from verbal, to an e-collar stim to a hard leash correction. Hard dogs may require a harsher correction than an average dog.

the metropolitan area that you live in and your level of expertise will ultimately decide how much you can make. working for yourself as a contractor will always be the most profitable once you have enough clients.

personally I started getting clients when I moderated several of the top fitness websites on the net many years ago. then after my first book was published it was all gravy from then on.
