It depends on where you live and how well behaved your children are. If you live in a small apartment then you should consider a smaller dog. If your children are well behaved then a dachaund might be a good choice. If you do get a dauchaund condider that you should get one as a puppy because dauchaunds won't tollorate small children unless raised with them. Also they are prone to back injuries. Another good dog breed for you might be a poodle because whether you live in a large home with a big backyard or in the city in an apartment the pooldle would be nice because they are low shedding dogs and come in 3 sizes. Standard(large) ,Medium and toy (small). They are friendly and make amazing family dogs and have sweet personalities. They are prone to hip dysplasia and eye problems. But that does NOT mean they will get eighter health problem. Also you should know poodles requier a lot of grooming because of their curly coat. I suggest you get one as a puppy so she has time to adapt to your kids your other dog and the cats. When you decide on what dog you get make sure you get one from a shelter or a good breeder. I HIGHLY recomend you see whether the dog your thinking of adopting is not too timid or energetic. You want to know what she's like before buying her. Remember spay or fix your dog and make sure you can afford to have another pet the grooming and vet visits it needs. Hope this helps. I had a poodle and she was an angel. :)

From my own personal experience, I'd recommend both the Irish Wolf Hound and the Dachshund(full or miniature, NOT toy!!!) See, the Irish Wolf Hound is a "giant" breed. Despite this, they are very gentle(read: non-violent at all!!!), grace-full, agile and extremely protective of their human children. They also do NOT have conflicts with other animals nor people. They ARE very capable of "reading" people and are very good at smelling out the good people form the bad and will let you know who can and whom shouldn't be allowed near your children without getting vicious. Dachshunds are very loving too and if you get a puppy, they will latch onto your kids and never be too far away from them when they are playing. The only drawback to the Dachshund is that they like to back at strangers a lot! I can't recommend mud-puppies however. Unless you WANT to spend all the time and money traveling to the kingdom of Landover. Then of course, your going to need a magical pass-port to enter and exit the kingdom, which those are very (read near impossible) to obtain as it IS a "magical" kingdom.

labrador/golden retreiver are excellent breeds for children. they're very easy going, have a wonderful temper, really smart and easy to train.
boxers are great for children and make perfect 'nannies', but they tend to drool a lot.
aeirdales are also quite affectionate and smart, and seem to get along quite nicely with other dogs/cats.
make sure to check animal shelters, most of the times those dogs turn out to be smart, very affectionate and friendly, and easy to train. they're also more likely to get along with other pets.
it might take a while to get your cats/fox terrier to get used to a new puppy. you'll have to keep an eye on them when together for the first few days.
your older pets might feel neglected or threatened by the arrival of the new puppy so make sure to give them lots of affection.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers.
They are so adorable (if u look on google they are ugly there with their show cut).
They are great with children.
My 4 year old twin nieces love him.
He is great with my 2 month old nephew.
They are medium sized. Perfect for a family that wants a big dog but can't have one. They don't shed. Very lovable.
My Wheaten dances with my niece (11) and he howls with music (especially Happy Birthday). Very easy to train. He was trained with in about 2-5 months.
