im supposed to get money back from last year's taxes, but i owe some for this year. do i write a check for the amount i owe and wait for the money i am owed? or will they know to offset the amount i owe from the amount i am to recieve? my current year forms will be efiled, while the previous year will be mailed in.

The years are treated separately, so write a check for what you owe this year, and wait for your refund from last year. Since you haven't filed yet for last year, you won't receive the refund in time to use the refund to pay this year's taxes.

Yes, send in the amount you owe. I don't think the IRS will hold your refund to wait and see what you will get back for the current year.
