How about making a card and gluing 50 gold pound coins on to it making out the number 50. They can then treat themselves.

Depends on how much time you have - I arranged a surprise for my parents 50th Birthday. We played detective and found lots of old friends and people from way back that they hadnt seen for years. We arranged a party but told them we were taking them to dinner. We have some wonderful pictures of the moment they saw all their old friends and family!
For a gift, you could get a portrait of them together. If you are creative, you could even write a poem or piece of prose about them and their lives together.

I have ther perfect suggestion....on my parents 50th..
I gave them $50. in Gold dollar coins. I had to notify the bank early so they could get the coins for me. Then, I bought a small gold bag (in the bridal section of an art/craft store). It made a good gift for them to remember, something they could use, and boy, did they get the thrill of "gold" for their golden!

See if you can get everyone that knows them to write down a memory of the two of them and put it together in a book for them, you can make it scrapbooklike or there are some websites that you can scan in all the memories and have them printed into a photoalbum book

For our parents 30th we put then up in the Dorcester hotel in London for the weekend, and they got chauffeured back and forth from a Westend Musical. They didn't want to come home at the end if it.

For our Ruby Wedding we received a picture of all our grand children put onto canvas - it was beautiful and takes pride of place in our lounge.
