You show me in the bible where it says this> "God only helps those who help themselves"
I don't know why people say this.

They say that because they cannot or don't read scripture. Jesus came to free those who, all their life time, were in bondage. In other words, God came to help those who could not help themselves --- and that's a fact.
People who use this quote either do not know what they are saying or think they can earn their own salvation. It sounds like a topic for an old lady's Sunday School lesson.
God needed to do something, because man was stuck in an impossible situation -- and many still are, despite the life and freedom God has provided in Christ Jesus.

I think you might be asking this in regards to an answer I posted yesterday....i used that term in my answer and so did somene else. I believe it was your question as well. You asked aside from creating everything, what does God do?
Well, I answered, God helps those who helps themselves. your question was implying that if something bad happens to you or whoever, how could there be a God. It seems like you are really trying to challenge all of us who believe in God by making us believe the God we believe in would not make us suffer on Earth. But you are very wrong. Sometimes tradegy strikes and it is ALWAYS for a reason. sometimes we do not know why it happens until years later, but if you listen to God, we will learn why these things happen. everything in our personal life is so for a very specific reason. All the good that happens IS because of God.....just like all the bad. Our life is in the hands of God, everything. But if you work hard to achieve goals, God will usually help us reach them. So if you want to give credit to the person, give them credit for listening to God.
And for all the Athiests that think this is crap, maybe great things have happened to you too, and you do not even believe in God, God is helping you as well. God helps us all and maybe one day you will chose to listen to Him.

One reason is that we would not even be alive without God. You are correct in that it takes humility and great faith not to give ourselves the credit for our privileges and great circumstances. We might all work very hard, but not all of us have the success that some do. We mustn't be arrogant in assuming that we did more than our circumstances allowed. That thinking makes us negatively prideful and prejudice toward those with less. James 2:3-6
But to answer your first question, I have to say that God also helps those who cannot, and are completely unable to help themselves - he helps them to endure their plight, and will do much more for them in the future..
James 1:27

Your phrase is called a figure of speech. There is a joke -- A little boy was drowning in the water. First a boat came by and offered to help. But the little boy was adament and would not accept help from the boat, he said, "God is going to help me." After the boat left, a helicopter flew by and yelled down to the boy again. The boy's answer was the same -- no, thanks "God is going to help me." Finally, the boy drowned and when he died and went to heaven he asked God, "Why didn't you help me?" God replied "I sent the boat and the helicopter . . . why didn't you accept their help?" The phrase God helps them who help themselves, is just a saying that means don't just wait for a miracle accept whatever help comes along.

God can work directly with divine intervention. But most of the time, in a way of helping us and helping others at the same time, he works thru others to help serve each other.
A prophet once said, "When you are in the service of your fellow beings, you are only in the service of your God."

Actually , I think the statement is to discourage parasites who think god will do everything for them.
Some people are very lazy and I suspect the admonition is to get some people going , instead of waiting for god to do it all . (the ones who say " I don't have to do anything, god will provide ")
