Alan Webb ran a 3:53.4 mile at the 2004 prefontaine classic.. the record before that was like 3:56 set in the early 70s or late 60s by Jim Ryun.. yes the senator from Kansas. Also, The top male 1600m high school runner in the country is probably Evan Jager from Algonquin, Illinois who went 4:06 at the Midwest Distance Gala at York High School. The top high school girl 1600m time is probably in the 4:30s but i'm not sure who ran that. Also, the top hs miler right now for the girls is probably in the 4:45 range

Definitely Alan Webb with his three something. However, most people don't reach that. You can make varsity with around 5 min for most teams (4:30-ish for really good teams) and girls are more in the 5-6 range.

not sure what the fastest is, but mine back in HS was like 5 1/2 min, which is/was pretty fast for a girl. mind you, this was like 15 years ago or so.
