you normally find the people who give it a bad reputation have never been before Glasgow is a great city and you'll not meet a friendlier bunch of people than Glaswegians

I think much of the blame is down to the media - they seem to love to present Glasgow in a very poor light.

From my experience the majority of the city has nothing wrong with it. I've been to places such as Easterhouse and the Gorbals and whilst it's true that they're not particularly appealing places they're infinitely better than many parts of South and East London, somewhat better than parts of Manchester and on a par with the worst areas of other cities including Liverpool, Sheffield and Leeds.

The one big difference is that Glaswegians are by and large a friendly bunch of people. They don't take kindly to English arrogance or superiority and why should they - the English are no better or worse.

Years ago I was working with a group at a Jazz festival in Glasgow. One of my colleagues was ill so went back to the hotel early, leaving me in the centre on my own as a single female. I walked back to the hotel. People were shocked I had done so. I live in London, so wandering around a city on my own doesn't bother me. There was no trouble and I didn't feel unsafe. I agree, there are certain areas of every city to avoid, but the average visitor goes nowhere near them.
