Generally speaking, the same tip scales should be used for your stylist as you would use for a waiter/waitress. You would tip 10% of the total for an average job, 15% for a good job, and 20% or more for an excellent job. Stylists usually give their assistants a cut of their tips, so it's not necessary to tip them. If you really like a particular haircut, I agree that $4-5 would be an appropriate tip for your stylist.
It's important to remember that stylists DO depend on your tips as a large part of their income, particularly if they work in a salon where their salary is based only on a commission of their sales (which most are). Stylists don't make a lot of money, so if you're lucky enough to find a really good one, treat him/her nice! Show them you appreciate their work. The person who responded above saying that "they don't expect it or remember it" is WRONG. They need the money just as much as you need YOUR paycheck. And believe me...they remember more than you think...

At a Restraunt we always tip double the tax that is 8.25% here. So $20 times 16.5% = $2.30 tip
