Physical therapy is primarily concerned with restoring function in people. It may be to walk, stand, balance, reach, etc. The job of a physical therapist is to evaluate possible reasons why someone may have a functional limitation which may be due to pain, lack of flexibility, weakness, etc. Once that has been determined, the PT will design and implement (or it might be implemented by the assistant) a treatment program which may involve stretching, strengthening, balance/gait training, manual and/or massage therapy, treatment modalities such as electrical stimulation or massage...etc.

Types of things PTs might see are patients who've had a traumatic injury, a joint replacement, a sports related injury, a stroke, a developmental disorder, chronic disease, children with neurological problems...the treatment population is vast.

If you'd like a bigger scope about what PTs do, go to the APTA website at:

Working with an injured body to extend the limited use of a finger, hand, arm, leg or foot or to recover overall use of a body due to injury to balance or due to stroke. Much of it is based on repeated movement to the limits of extension and repeated movement to train the body back into use had before the problem.
I had physical therapy after surgery to repair broken bones in my little finger to loosen the joint and rehabilitate the stiffened muscles from not moving while in the cast. A friend has continuing PT to relieve pain after falling in an open manhole now that previous PT has given her the ability to walk and balance without hurting injured parts.
