My brother is deciding between the Corolla and the Civic...I don't want to retype all my advice, so I'm pasting what I put in two other questions earlier...

Hope this helps!
----------------------------------------------------
Say you want a Toyota, lets pick the Corolla. Right now, the 2007s are on the lot and the 2006s are stacked up in the used car sections at the Toyota dealerships, two dealers in my area literally have 20 of them, all leaseback 2006 models with around 20,000kms on them.

In this situation, if you're not paying cash, its better to go for a new 2007 because they'll offer a MUCH lower interest rate (My brother wants one and the 06 is like 9% interest where as the 07 they said like 3%) so the payments are lower, you'll probably end up paying less for the car in the long run. Reason for these incentives is because they WANT you to buy a brand new car. They can get rid of the leasebacks, but they want the new cars to keep selling. Right now, with that model (and probably others too, have to look into it), you can take advantage.

The case is pretty much the same with the Civic...right now the 2006s are there on the used lots at the Honda dealers but they'll slap you with a high interest rate, probably 9 or 10%. You can lease a new 2007 and they'll (at least Toyota offered my brother) 2 to 3% interest. The monthly payments will only be about $100. As a student, if you work part time, you can afford that.

Here's the bad part- You can pay for the car, but because its a newer car (and I don't know the rates where you live), insurance is likely to be high. If your parents are financially able, you can ask if they will back you on one year's insurance or something. Now, it will be hard to convince them you can own a 2006 or 2007 model, but think about it: Both the Civic and Corolla are reasonably priced and very reliable- you could go for an older model, say 2003- the trouble is, the 2003 models are NOT MUCH LOWER IN PRICE, and you'll be limited with options, color, and the car will have lots of miles on it. Pay a couple more grand and you get a 2007 for a low monthly payment. So, newer car, uses less gas, less maintenance, looks good, has that new car smell...and for like a $150 monthly payment, you drive away.

The other option is, I'm not sure if you guys have this down in the States, but up here in Canada, we have whats sometimes called "creative financing". Basically its a combination of lease and financing. For a car like the Corolla or Civic, you (assuming a 48 mth/4 year term) pay around $10,000 up front, drive away, no interest or payments for the 48 months. At the end, you pay the lease end value of the car (around $7000) to keep your car or just give it back, the dealer will be legally bound to take the car back for lease value (or sell it for higher, pay the dealer, keep the profits).

Honda Civic is the best. If you want a more sportier and lower maintanence vehicle, get the Mazda 3. Honda parts get a bit expensive.

ok, ok , ok, im sure everyone is going to say a honda or toyota. just keep in mind they are very picky when it comes to maintenance. they dont like to go over the mileage on oil changes at all. everyone will think im crazy but its true, i would say a Subaru RS sedan (oil change intervals of 7500 miles- recommended by subaru), ford focus (very inexpensive, oil change interval would be safe at 6000 miles, low insurance cost), Corolla would not be as bad as a honda. Insurance is relatively low.

STAY AWAY FROM ALL KIAS, HYUNDAIS, AND SUZUKIS. These cars are throw away cars.

For the combination of looks, reliability and efficiency you really can't go wrong with Hondas. They have kept up with modern design and just go forever. Depending on personal taste and budget, the Civic, Accord, CRV,etc are all great cars.
