Does anyone have any home remedies that might clear it up?

2007-04-10 09:09:58 · 11 answers · asked by future dr.t (IM) 5 in Pets Cats

Its not that I am irresponsible, she is a stray who showed up and I would like to help her. I am a student with three children. Money is very tight and if I can't help her on my own she will end up at the pound and likely be killed. She's a very sweet cat and our neighborhood is full of strays or I would ask a neighbor to take her. Please suggestions, I hate to see her end up at the pound.

you can put some neosporin on a qtip and actually put some into her eye...she is going to fight you but guaranteed it will clear up by 48hours...the neosporin will not hurt her just dont use the kind with pain relief...and i commend you for helping a stray cat...i have been in your position many times...in oct i rescued a 20yr old blind cat that someone in the neighborhood was tired of and left for dead...good luck and thanks you have a good heart

Please don't experiment with home remedies - eyes are sensitive and you could easily make it worse.

The cat needs to see the vet for some eyedrops. These will not be expensive. I appreciate that you want to help a stray cat, and I think it's nice, but if you really can't afford it it would be kinder to take it to a shelter. Just ring around and find one with a non-destruct policy, there are plenty. I don't know your area, so get a vet to recommend a non-destruct one.

Antibiotic eye drops are the only thing for this cat, and they really are inexpensive. However, if you choose to take this cat in bear in mind that it could in the future develop a serious illness for which you will have no choice to take it to the vet, so if you really can't manage this, or get pet insurance for it, then a shelter is certainly the best option.

Also bear in mind that watery/discharging eyes, particularly in a stray cat could be a sign of cat flu or leukaemia - this is not cheap to treat!

I really hope no one does suggest home remedies - not because I want to be mean obviously, but simply because it's dangerous. Also be aware that there ARE sickos on this board who will intentionally suggest the wrong remedies, and it's not always obvious!!

That's a tough one, considering your additional information. Unfortunately, there are many reasons for runny eyes - likely to be pink eye, or just a cold. Cats can fight those two things off on their own, it will just take a lot longer, and may risk infecting all of the strays in the neighborhood. Certainly don't put anything in her eyes that is not a Dr. prescribed antibiotic. Does your community have a no-kill shelter you could take her to? Or, ask around for someone at your school or work that may be looking for a new fuzzy member of thier household. If the cat is a specific breed (for example - siamese) then you may be able to find a rescue organization for it (I know the siamese rescue organization takes in Siamese kitties off the street).

Try: www.carecredit.com

You can get an interest-free loan from them. The vet will get paid, you can make payments to carecredit, and the cat will get the treatment it should.

or try www.imom.org Contact them and see if you qualify.

I appreciate your concern and your efforts to help the poor little stray; you have a kind heart and are doing the responsible thing (more than most people would do!). But please think about your situation and stop breeding until you get a good paying job. If you can't afford a simple one-visit to the vet plus a small tube of opthalmic ointment, then it's certain you are not giving the best care to the kids either. Maybe you should drop the school and get a job. You can go to school anytime.

As other people who have answered this have suggested, your cat needs to be taken to the vet for a complete diagnosis and safe treatment.

If you had an eye infection, would you want someone to use a home remedy on you and chance damaging or even losing your eyesight?

You have to remember that you need to take care of a pet just as well and just as diligently as you would care for yourself or your own children. They are dependent on you for their health and well-being.

Good luck and I hope your cat gets better soon.

If the eye is infected, you will need to get eye drops from the vet that have an antibiotic in them. Let the doctor diagnose and prescribe the medication.

NO.
Infection needs antibiotics. We are talking EYE here. Would you like someone to put some foreign substance in YOUR eye and potentially cause blindness just to save a few bucks on the doctor?
Be a responsible pet owner and take your pet to a VET, not a bunch of people on the internet who have too much time on their hands.

My first advice is to take the cat to the vet, but I do know of a product that has a natural antibiotic from a flower extract that works. It is eye envy and will not hurt the cats eyes at all. I buy mine from this site. They are very nice people.

That happened to my cat once. The vet will give you eye drops to put in the cat's eye once or twice a day, and anti-biotic pills to stick in its mouth. Good luck administering the pills - hope your cat doesn't have sharp teeth!

Take her to the vet. She might need antibiotics if it's infected. No home remedies are going to fix that.
