An evolutionist asked me a question today and I need some help.

He asked me about a genus of plants called Lithops. He said there are about 100 species and that they are ALL native to south-central Africa and no where else.

He asked me if I thought God had created them all there and I said maybe. He said, if he did, why ONLY there because they are well suited to grow in other places (I have to admit he was right, he grows them in many places here in Colorado).

So I thought maybe they arrived there after the flood. But he asked how likely it would be that about 100 species of the same genus arrived there and only there.

He said that scientists believe they all evolved there from an original one species. He also pointed out that the family (Aizoaceae) that they are classified into, occur mostly in Africa.

So help me out here. I know he must be wrong for new species do not just appear. How do we explain this?

God bless.

Morganie: I told him about that once but he said that organisims get new information by chromosome dubbleing. He also said that new species appearing is exactly how evolution works. I have to admit, from the pictures and books he showed me, the plants seem to be doing just fine and are in no danger of extinction. Thanks for the link though.

Um, no one is really answering my question. I know God had a reason for doing what he did and I know that there must be a good creationist answer to this. Please help me out.

They can sit around all day and ask why this and why that. How can any of us know the mind of God. Why did he create things at the bottom of the sea where no man can go? Why did he create stars and planets that we can only see with a telescope? Why did he create other species of animals on certain islands and not on others? There is no way a creation can know the mind of their creator. He is infinitely more wise than us! As far as the evolution thing. Ask him about macro evolution. Show us some proof of one species turning into another. Yes, micro evolution does exist. Species change characteristics but there is definitely no evidence of macro evolution. You would think that if all of these other species changed into different species there would be evidence everywhere! There is NO evidence! Because we didn't turn into people from monkeys, fish or anything else. We were created by God in his image. It all boils down to faith, either you have it or you don't. You either believe that all of the incredible things of this universe are an accident or you believe in a supreme being! I personally, can not believe everything is an accident. The odds are to incredible, totally mind boggling. Once you accept there is a supreme creator then you have to ask yourself would he want to let us know about himself and what he expects of us. I believe the answer is yes. Well, then it get's down to which religion. I believe the bible is more credible than all the rest, and less not forget, all the other religions can take you to the grave of their God. Ours, Jesus Christ rose from the grave! Let's see them top that!!!...Praise the Lord and may God bless you!!!!!!!

The plant probably did evolved from one general species of plant. Even though I believe in the Creation, I believe that God causes things to change in some form or way. I

don't believe evolution is the one answer but apart of the answer. There are many groups and races of people. Those people came from Adam and Eve, yet they all look different, due to change of environment. Things change over time. Evolution is a part of the answer but its not the entire answer, tell that too an evolutionist.
I'm a Christian too, don't worry.

It's a pretty shallow argument to use in support of evolution! You could say that about many things!! Perhaps someone took the seeds there! But how do people know that these plants are only native to Southern-Central Africa? Have they been to every place on earth? These so-called experts also have said that they knew of all the living species of animals on earth and yet each year, some new ones are discovered!

There are facts about evolution that make creationists look silly when they argue against it. There is also nothing about evolution that disproves the bible and God as the creator of the earth.

It is often the case that we run into problems using a literal view of the bible, or we try to answer things that we really don't know. I believe that many spices have evolved to some point, but evolution alone it is not an answer for the existence of all the varied life we have on earth.

Why is it so hard to think that God did what He did with creation for reasons that are just too difficult for our sinful human minds to comprehend? This genus of plants grows only in Africa, but could survive in many other regions of the world. So? Siberean Tigers were created and live only in Siberia, but that doesn't necessarily mean that they cannot survive in areas of the Canadian arctic or Antarctica or some other northern like regions of the world. The same thing with Penguins. Canadian Geese are native only to Canada, but they can survive in many other parts of the world. The question of why a Creator God would only create a certain species in a certain part of the world is not one that neither science nor reason can answer in any way, especially one that denounces His existence. God created what He created and where He created them for reasons that are beyond our own human understanding. Why is that so hard for people to understand?

There is no proof that any God did anything unless you accept that a God created the Mass and energy that caused the Big Bang. I would think it would be insulting to such a God if you would not believe that the God would know enough to perceive that the Big Bang began evolution. The God would also know the paths of evolution of every mote of that big Bang. Including the Earth and human beings amongst everything else in the universe.

Why do Christians underrate a God just to have a parable in a book accepted as a true happening?

If you want the Truth......Ask a Pagan.

If you are sincerely interested in coming to an understanding of the issues involved in this particular argument, I highly recommend a book called Life - How Did it Get Here? By Evolution or by Creation? It presents a fair comparison of both the theory of Evolution and of the Bible account of Creation, along with explaining the difference between the Bible account of Creation and "Creationism." The book leaves you with an informed decision to make instead of just having people "blanketly" say, "Science teaches this" or "The Bible teaches that." What I mean is, do some research from a trusted source. Don't let people's simple opinions make your decision for you.

Lithops (commonly called „flowering stones“ or „living stones“) are true mimicry plants: their shape, size and color causes them to resemble small stones in their natural surroundings. The plants blend in among the stones as a means of protection. Grazing animals which would otherwise eat them during periods of drought to obtain moisture usually overlook them. Even experts in the field sometimes have difficulty locating plants for study because of this unusual deceptive camouflage.

In the wild, Lithops inhabit vast dry regions of southern Africa. Several areas in which these plants grow receive less than 2 inches of rainfall per month throughout the entire year. In an extreme situation of low rainfall, at least one species of Lithops depends on mist or fog to provide its main source of moisture *. Lithops could not survive in many areas that they are found were it not for their capacity to store water. In fact, almost the entire plant is devoted to this function. The "body" of the plant is divided into two succulent leaves fused together in the shape of an inverted cone. The fissure or slit at the top of the plant is the division of the two leaves. There is no stem as such, but rather the taproot joins abruptly at the base of the leaves. The structure of the plant reveals to the imagination the harsh environment in which Lithops live: the scarcity of water demands that young plants limited to only two leaves and a root system, as more extravagant growth would only serve to waste water. The leaves are thick to store enough water for the plants to survive for months without rain. The plants are small and keep a low profile to minimize the effect of the intense heat and light of their climate.

Check out the article below on the definition of "species" vs. "kind"

Any real evolution (macroevolution) requires an expansion of the gene pool, the addition of new genes and new traits as life is supposed to move from simple beginnings to ever more varied and complex forms (“molecules to man” or “fish to philosopher”). Suppose there are islands where varieties of flies that used to trade genes no longer interbreed. Is this evidence of evolution? No, exactly the opposite. Each variety resulting from reproductive isolation has a smaller gene pool than the original and a restricted ability to explore new environments with new trait combinations or to meet changes in its own environment. The long-term result? Extinction would be much more likely than evolution.

You know there are Christians who don't believe in evolution, but I am one that does. Why couldn't evolution exist, why couldn't that be the way God did it. I do believe species grow and transform to fit the environment around it. I think it's one of the many miracles God does. I believe in Big Bang, I believe God did the Big Bang. Why can't both ideas mix? God can do anything he wants, and it doesn't say anthing against the idea in the Bible.
