Easter

originally a Saxon word (Eostre), denoting a goddess of the Saxons, in honour of whom sacrifices were offered about the time of the Passover. Hence the name came to be given to the festival of the Resurrection of Christ, which occured at the time of the Passover. In the early English versions this word was frequently used as the translation of the Greek pascha (the Passover). When the Authorized Version (1611) was formed, the word "passover" was used in all passages in which this word pascha occurred, except in Act 12:4. In the Revised Version the proper word, "passover," is always used.

Ask the Catholics, They gave it that name. Doesn't mean we celebrate a pagan God though, we definately don't, i guess since easter means new beginnings, And when Jesus rose from the dead, their were great new beginnings for the believers. Also I think the catholics wanted to take the Easter and make it a Christian holiday. They also did that with Halloween as well. I think a Catholic would know better than a Protestant like me.

The Roman Catholics adopted it into today's traditions they call the word of god. It Came by the way of Rome, Not JESUS nor the true servants of God. Jesus has all is holy days outlined in the book of Leviticus 23rd chapter. Non of them have anything to do with rabbits nor eggs. That is Paganism . Plain & Simple. Read Your Bible!

The same reason they go to church and worship on a pagan day, Sunday pagans worshiped the Sun that is where the name came from.

Easier to convert the Pagans to Catholicism by giving them something familiar to relate to. "Hey - we have Easter, too. Same kinda thing, only slightly different..."

It was one of the proverbial carrots...

Er... we didn't!
Is the way locals called it.
In other places, we called it otherwise!

However, this is the product of a tendency called "sincretism", by which new cultural arrivals accomodated to the previous ones. Is something you can see in Language, painting... almost in any are of culture, and in religion too.
