When you state popular, you have to consider the religion with the most members. In the US that would be Christianity with the RCC the largest of the group, and the same applies worldwide. There are many other countries in which other religions are the most popular, but worldwide the RCC is the biggest.
Too bad.

Mormonism. The faith of Mitt Romney, the chameleon Presidential candidate.

It is the first American church ever established, and uses science fiction as its base. The founder, Joseph's Myth was a non-working farm boy who got into and out of trouble since the age of 6. He was a great storyteller, and later learned that people were gullible, if you provided enough details.

Today, he is forgotten, along with most of the original tales and doctrines, and the membership would excommunicate him and most early apostles if they were alive now.

The missionaries teach only simple things, and nothing about the sordid past of the religion, nor do they dare inform new investigators about the funny underwear that is required to be worn, once you have attended the Temple.

If you desire a PR, glossy Corporate, whitewashed child's-version about the church, see: www.LDS.org

If you need actual statistics and history, check out the place where former members chat and post each day:

And almost 3 billion of those persons are in China and India. And maximum of China and India are the two Bhuddist or Hinduism. Which leaves yet another 3 billion. And seeing as how Islam is the main observed and practiced faith or a minimum of the only with the main followers. Islam may be the main "oftentimes used" faith. Ahh stupid Xtians making up fake stupid information to cause them to look cool and astonishing. yet then they fail while authentic life information are shown >_<

In the United States, its Christianity, by far, in its numerous forms. I believe Roman Catholiscism is the single largest denomination at 25% or so of all American Christians. The majority of the remaining Christians are probably some form of Protestant, but there are so many denominations.

I believe there are about 1.5 billion Christians, 1.1 billion Muslims, with Hindus and Buddhists somewhere behind those, in the hundreds of millions. Animistic beliefs still predominate in many less developed areas as well. There are only about 15-20 million Jews - that is very small in comparison. 6 million lost in WWII was a terrible blow for them considering their already low numbers

I'm not sure what you mean by popular. Religion is not supposed to be a popularity contest. If you mean what religion has more people, or a higher membership than any other, then I would probably go with either Hindu or Bhudda simply because of the volume of people in India and China that follow those faiths. It certainly is not Christian or any of its denominations. Within Christianity, then Catholicism is the most numerous in membership. I'm pretty sure that Islam has more adherents than Christianity and Bhuddaism and Hinduism have both of those outnumbered.

In the US it's certainly Christianity. I think world religion may be pretty evenly split between Christians, Jews and Muslims, although there are a large number of Hindus as well.
