While setting in the library the other day, and talking to a fellow Christian brother, this topic came up all of a sudden. This library doesn't seem to have a strick dress code, or at least they don't seem to enforce it!
A half naked (naval showing) slutty type young woman in her late teens or early twenties came up to the three floor where my friend and I were discussing signs of the last days and such. Or am I judging here? You bet! Christians must ALWAYS be on guard against the 'wiles of the devil' !!
So when the two of us, being Christian, saved and filled with the Holy Spirit, but in that seen this young Jezebel, I immediately turned my head and my friend and Christian brother did the same! Does that give you an idea of what Christian men have to go through to protect their faith, and 'holy' walk with their Savior these Babylonian days?!
Then there are the Christians who never seem to get the 'lust' of desiring material goods and services. A Volkswagen is not good enough for them. They've got to have a Jaguar!! While their Christian brothers and sister roam the streets, hungry, tired, and even homeless!!! Sell the richy car I say, and get a cheaper but reliable one, and give the extra money to the minister of God somewhere! God will surely bless this person!!
Then there are socalled Christians in the government of this land who 'love' waging war in the name of some 'god forsaken' war, like the one in Iraq, and darn to call it justified, in the sight of an Almighty God, watching on!!! Theirs is the 'pride of life' and the 'lust for control and power'! Enough said here. Let God be their judge, as He is mine, . . . .

Verse 16. For all that is in the world] All that it can boast of, all that it can promise, is only sensual, transient gratification, and even this promise it cannot fulfil; so that its warmest votaries can complain loudest of their disappointment.
The lust of the flesh] Sensual and impure desires which seek their gratification in women, strong drink, delicious viands, and the like.
Lust of the eyes] Inordinate desires after finery of every kind, gaudy dress, splendid houses, superb furniture, expensive equipage, trappings, and decorations of all sorts.
Pride of life] Hunting after honours, titles, and pedigrees; boasting of ancestry, family connections, great offices, honourable acquaintance, and the like.
Is not of the Father] Nothing of these inordinate attachments either comes from or leads to God. They are of this world; here they begin, flourish, and end. They deprave the mind, divert it from Divine pursuits, and render it utterly incapable of spiritual enjoyments.

To me it means you can find everything that will cause you you to sin in this world. Since Satan himself said that the authority on earth has been given to him and he could give it anyone who worship him (See tempttation of Jesus). I do not think he is telling a lie on Jesus.
God did not put those here on earth but He knows those are in the world. Now, it is up to us if we would submit ourselves to all that is available her on earth but God has given us the Free Will to make a choice which road is to take on our journey through life. We are to find and create our own destiny. God will give us His blessings if we choose to do the righteous way based on His commands or His Curse (meaning he will not bother to look for us) if you choose to do away from His teachings.

Just what it says.
Jesus told his disciples and followers to not be a part of the world. Because the whole world is lying in the power of the wicked one. Jesus knew that Satan would try to make these things seem appealing, but he warned that they are not in accord with God's will, but in accord with the will of satan. So we must avoid these things to have a close relationship with Jesus and God.

We should not desire anything in the world if we belong to God.
Satan is ruler of the world.
If you go down to verse 18 John warns of the antichrist, and how many antichrist have already come.
If you listen to some non-believers, they are very worldly.
Those of us who have Christ don't have the same desires.

The biggest thing it says to me is it is talking about people who trust in their own means, things of the world, to take care of them rather than God...I think most people become Christians because they hit a wall and realize they can't take care of everything themselves.

The things that the world has to offer, those things that appeal to our carnal desires, are only distractions from those things that are truly important. Our rewards are not here on earth, but in heaven with our Lord.

That these things are not of God but of the people that live in the world.

That God is supposed to be holy, and that the world is not. Don't let the ways of the word get in your way.

Being selfish and looking for more to have or do to satisfy your cravings is not about the Father, it's about the sinful nature.
