You can know by faith, e.g. that Christ died for you.
Also that you are a child of God through faith.
1 John 3:1 "Consider how great is the love that the Father has bestowed on us in calling us His children ! For that is what we are."
You can know it directly through the Holy Spirit, whose presence is always with christians, and whose presence can be tangible at times, like being filled with liquid love:
* Romans 5:5 "through the Holy Spirit He has given us, God's love has flooded our hearts"
* Ephesians 3:14 Paul tells the readers that he prays that "Christ may dwell in your hearts in love", to grasp the reality of the love "So you may be filled with the very fullness of God"
For christians the presence of the Holy Spirit in a tangible way can also come through anointing, not that I understand the whole anointing issue. I have a Sid Roth interview with an evangelist called Randy Clark, and if I listen to it I sometimes get anointed with the Holy Spirit's loving presence. God's love is amazingly good.

I woudn't worry about it!
The term "God" could mean anything...making it a neutral and often times meaningless word that people spend way too much time arguing about...
People who "believe" in "God" are simply doing what they want to do...they give definition to the word and apply it however they want - negatively or positively. In your private life the word is as important as you want it to be.
"God" aside, in the end it's what we do for each other that will make the world a better place. Not arguing and fighting over meaninglessness and silly religious traditions that were developed before the age of modern Science and medicine.
Do your best to promote scientific learning and rational thinking and don't worry about it. Man will always have an obsession with a "higher power" so we might as well get used to it...
Be well!

Romans 5:8 - But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
What more do you want?
