I know of no reason why you should not wish your friend a Happy Birthday.

Most religious celebrate their birthday and their anniversay of taking their vows (or ordination).

With love in Christ.

Well, I'm sure a monk would appreciate a nice "happy birthday"!

Sure, just say "Happy Birthday, Brother -----." It'll probably make his day, though he might not be allowed to admit it. Do it anyway, it's a nice thing to do.

I don't know, but if he's taken a vow of silence, don't expect him to say thank you. :)
