Maybe they're just careful/safe drivers. What's an extra second or so?

Because some cars especially older ones do take time to go through the gears. Also, many people like to make sure the light is green before they move away instead of roaring away like some boy racer. It is not the problem of hold ing a queue up, but the importance of making sure the crossing is clear ofpeople and making sure it is safe to go forwards.

Hear hear!
Sometimes the lights are only on green for about five seconds (when, of course, they've been on red for one full minute) and these drivers that are dopey at moving off knacker it up for us other drivers four or five cars back in the queue getting through.
God help us if they have to turn left from the lights, too! That normally takes another hour.

Together with Murphy's Law, one of the fundamental truisms of the universe is that everyone notices the red light had turned green except the driver in front of the queue.

Be patient - there may be a good reason. For example, a friend of mine, when 9 months pregnant, found driving quite tricky - with the result that once when she stopped at traffic lights, the driver from the car behind ran up to her window and shouted 'Can't you drive any faster?' He retreated, covered in confusion, when she showed him her enormous bump!

For the self same reason that some people seem amazed when asked to pay at the check-out, they are not taking the cues that something else will happen.
i.e 1. at a red light, it WILL change to green, best be prepared to move away.
2. at Sainsbury's, when your shopping has been scanned, you WILL be expected to pay for it.
These people mosey through life in a complete state of unpreparedness.

Sometimes people just are plain ol' not paying attention to the light. Other times their exercising caution in ensuring no one's going to run the red light form the other direction. Still others just don't have the strength in their legs to floor it the millisecond it turns green.

Totally agree.

I think some people are either mentally slow or just plain out to annoy the people behind them just because they can.

Just like people who accelerate when being overtaken, only to slow down afterwards.

As for the other comments about checking for other people jumping the lights - why not use your EYES to see whether the other cars are driving forwards or not.
Its not rocket science.

There's always some **** who wants to run accross at the last minute. I'd rather take the time to see and bollox to the people behind tooting the horns, they should have won pole position if they wanna race.
