actually, it means "we go"...it's the verb "ir" conjugated in first person plural: "Siempre vamos a la playa en el verano" (We always go to the beach in the summer). If used as an imperative, then it means "let's go": "¡Vamos!"
edit:
- "voy" is not an infinitive...the verb is still "ir"..."voy" is the verb "ir" conjugated as first person singular (I go)
- "vámonos" is more like "let's leave" rather than "let's go"
- "vamos" combined with other verbs can have the general meaning of "let's", for example "Vamos a bailar" (Let's dance), vamos a jugar béisbol (Let's play baseball), etc.

vamos = let´s (do something)
let´s play = vamos a jugar
or we go = we go to the beach = (nosotros) vamos a la playa
but can also mean come on
come on you can do it = vamos tú puedes hacerlo

The conjugation of the verb "IR" which means "to go"... conjugated to 1st person plural as a command (imperativo, or "imperative")... "let's go."
edit: corrected myself from 3rd person plural to 1st... sorry.
