Do you work from your home? Use your personal vehicle for work? Do you pay for your own medical insurance? Do you pay for a beeper or cell phone that is used for work? Trade publications, uniforms, safety equipment, tools, etc....anything that your company does not reimburse you for is your expense.

Look at the IRS website (irs.gov) for a complete list, but pretty much anything that is required for you to earn money specific to your trade/profession. Get form 1040 and take a look at the schedule C.

Anything any small business can write off, since a 1099 can be considered a business of one employee. Travel expenses, advertising costs, etc.

Get a schedule C and check it out. Go to IRS website and download the Schedule. I love schedule C. You can write off lots of fun things. People with W-2s are sheep.
