Read it? I practically wrote it!

I was a protestant christian minister, ordained when I was only 24. I delivered countless sermons, preached the good word at every occasion, and lived a model, moral life.

Today, I am an anti-theistic satanist.

I was a baptist until I became older to see the ridiculousness in the bible. I did not read the bible as a child. I just believed with my parents and preachers and bible school taught me. It is when I started to read the bible on my own as an adult I began to realize how unintelligently the book was written.

I believe in the Godliness of the universe and its intelligent design but that does not imply the existence of a God. If there is a God that could have created such a wonderful working system from nature, to the planet, to the universe could not have inspire such a book filled with hate, murder, slavery, degradation of women and much more evil.

As you read the bible you can find man's badly conceived ideologies all over the pages. As you read and understand the bible it becomes glaringly obvious it is not the work of an all powerful, all knowing, all loving, and intelligent God.

Different groups have different ideas about what being a Christian means. I never believed all the things that many Christians profess to believe, but I did consider myself a person of faith for many years. And, yes, I have read the Christian Bible many times, and the Qur'an, and the Bhagavad Gita and Upanishads. And I've also studied the Tanakh and Talmud. I consider them great sources of inspiration and still enjoy reading them very much.

I was born an atheist. Later I become Wiccan. I have never been any kind of Christian.

However, I've read the bible in some of its original languages and more than a score of translations, so although I am ignorant of Christianity, I know what it is supposed to be.

Atheist.

Have read the Bible sixteen times, in nine translations.

The first four times were due to the insistence of a step-mother and her relatives, the next five times were after converting and once I realized what complete nonsense it all is, I reread it several more times, partly to gain a solid understanding of the relationship (or lack thereof) between the many texts.

Any current interest in the text of the Bible comes from a Richard Dawkins/Isaac Asimov perspective or from my interest in Mediterranean cultures, mythology and history.

We do have more extant information from that region than from any other outside of Asia and I enjoy the big puzzle it presents us with.

I am a agnostic myself, in my experience atheist and agnostics know the bible better the majority of Christians. Most Christians I talk to do not even know the history of their own religion. For instance they have no idea the Catholic church is is the oldest christian church (Greek Orthodox may argue this). Agnostics and atheist usually have read into many religions and see where they conflict and the discrepancies and find it hard to believe in anything after that.

I've only read parts of the Bible. I found it too long-winded and didn't believe anything I read. Needless to say, I was never a Christian, even when my parents took me to church (this didn't last long, since my mother felt it was obvious that Christianity was not my path). I see no point to read the Bible anymore. I don't anything else to reaffirm my beliefs.
