Seal teams have a 90% failure rate. The pictures you see probably aren't SEALS I don't think they pose for pictures. You first go to Boot camp then after boot camp you go to your "A" school to learn your rate. During boot camp or "A" school you can take the seal test and if you pass you go to Navy dive school After "A" school. Then you go to Army Jump school. After all of that you go to SEAL training. Then there would be other school after seal training. This could 2 years before your assign to a unit.

No you can enlist legally at 17 so you could be as young as 17 if you can make it into the program. The pictures you see are of people that have been doing their jobs for a few years. You could have a 48 year old guy if he enlisted at 18 and retired at 30 years.

U.S. Special Operations Command has many subordinate units which require very different training and possessing different levels of fame. Other special operations-oriented forces don't fall entirely under USSOCOM (or one of its subordinate commands) but still preform special duties. These forces include (note some terms refer to jobs while others refer to units): Air Force: Special Tactics, CCTs, PJs, CWTs, SOF TAC-Ps, Special Aviation, Ravens Army: Special Forces (Green Berets), Rangers, RRD, Nightstalkers, Pathfinders, LRSU, PSYOP, Civil Affairs, Delta Force Navy: SEALs, SBTs, SDV, MCT, VSWMCM/EOD, DEVGRU Marines: Force Recon, FAST, MEU(SOC) and MSPF, CAG, DAP, SRT, RRT, CBIRF, Scout/Snipers, MSG Battalion

Couple of reasons you seem to see more older special operators in the media: they do look for guys with a little bit of maturity rather than hot-headed kids who can't grasp teamwork, perhaps the older guys are past the point where they can do covert ops so it doesn't matter if their face gets shown publicly.

Nature of the job tends to skew toward people with 2 or more year in service. So yes, it is rare to see a 18 or 19 old at hell week.

They want sailors who are in top physical condition, regardless of age. The environment they operate in is punishing on the human body, more so than any other special operations branch. Once you get to your team, maturity will probably work in your favor.
