then aren't all christians guilty of idolatry? isn't that a big nono in the old testament?

the bible is made up of two parts... even you should know this... the old testament is the jewish bible. so it is possible that the old testament could be right without the new testament being right. but it's nice that you can concede that the bible might not be the truth.

nick... you're assuming two things.
1) you're assuming jesus is the son of god.
2) no, a son is not his father. i am a completely different person than my father. if my father is a doctor, that doesn't make me a doctor. if my father is god, that does not make me god.

kait... you're referring to new testament. my question is based on the assumption that the new testament and only the new testament is a lie.

Be careful. You might cause some of them to actually have to think for once, instead of blindly accepting.

If Jesus was not God, idolatry would not matter, because Christianity would not exist.

Christ is apart of the Holy Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is possible because He is God. All things are possible through Christ. It is a very hard concept to describe and also to understand. Please ask a pastor or priest.

The question you asked is a difficult question. Jesus is God, so the question is immediately invalid.

But you may want to know why we believe He is God. "Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you." - this is how we know that Christ is with us. We search for something in our lives, but 'we never rest until we rest in thee'. Please read Matthew 7.

Yes it is a 'big nono' to worship false gods. This is why Jesus was nailed to a cross. He proclaimed to be God and was put to death for it. This is how serious false worship was during Jesus’ time.

If you need more information, please speak with a pastor or priest. Hope this helps!

(To answer your second question - Christians would not follow Christ if He was a false prophet. It would be against everything that we believe as Christians.

The Holy Trinity, God, is love. This is expressed in the love of the Father for the son, and son for the Holy Spirit, ect. If Christ was not apart of the Holy Trinity, the loving nature of Christianity, the very teaching of Christ, would not be invalid, and therefore the religion would also be invalid.

I am not saying that people would not follow a ‘false prophet.’ Of course people do! Look at the world around us! I am saying that if Jesus is not God, then the religion would be false. Please do not take my comment out of context. I did not say anything about satan being god.

Again, I do not study theology, so please speak with a pastor or priest. These are very serious questions, and you can get a very seriously wrong answer if you talk to the wrong person.

Before I go ~ I just want to tell you that those who seek for the truth are closer to Christ than they know and that Christ is calling you by name this very moment. God bless & take care.)

From what I was told as a child who was raised in a christian church the holy spirit, God and Jesus are the trinity or three in one so they rule and act as one body. Technically in that case it wouldn't be idolatry.

However, when I asked my minister at age 15 why Jesus prayed to himself or did things in his own name or could turn away from Himself I was told to have faith :P. To me that meant either we had the book wrong or Jesus was suffering from a multiple personality disorder.

I gave up on Christianity itself a couple of years later after exploring 5 other demonations.

John 1:1 says that “the Word was God.” John 1:14 says that “the Word became flesh.” This clearly indicates that Jesus is God in the flesh. Acts 20:28 tells us, "...Be shepherds of the church of God, which He bought with His own blood." Who bought the church with His own blood? Jesus Christ. Acts 20:28 declares that God purchased the church with His own blood. Therefore, Jesus is God!

Except Christians believe in Jesus as God. True Christians don't worship Jesus as a figure, they worship him for what he represents: the greater good. "Idolatry," as described in the OT, is worshiping a wooden/stone structure and thinking this structure IS god. Christians don't worship Jesus as a human, but as an extension of God on earth, for us to see and touch and believe.

Christians also believe we all came from Adam and Eve. If so them we are ALL guilty of incest. Another big nono, just another in a LONG line of serious problems with the bible and religious beliefs.

If Jesus is not God then the bible has told a lie... If the bible has lied then it is not credible... If it is not credible, idolatry is not a sin.... either way a christian is not guilty of idolatry.

Even IF Jesus was the son of god (assuming he was even real), the christians who celebrate easter (a pagan holiday dedicated to the goddess "Eastre" where followers gave offerings of colored eggs) would be breaking the first commandment and also guilty of idolatry. :p
