My aunts dog acts really weird. She's always crying and shaking like a leaf. No matter what you do she doesn't stop. You could take for a walk, feed her, give her treats but she still acts weird. Is it possible for a dog to be depressed?

Animals can and do suffer from any medical and mental disorders that humans suffer from. Although animals do not have a moral conscious they do have emotions. If not, they wouldn't be loyal to their families and have love for them. I have a dog who has seperation anxiety and anxiety attacks so bad that she hyperventilates and passes out. She has been on anti-anxiety medication for years. She also is terrified of storms. When I was a child I had a dog who had puppies. When we gave her puppies away she cried and howled for weeks. It was pitiful. She missed them so much. I tried to console her but she just grieved and grieved for them. She did the same thing when my brother was injured, She cried and howled for him until he was able to come out and play with her. She was lonely. My vet confirmed this when I spoke to her about it.

Yes, dogs can undergo stress just like people. But it would be a very good idea to take her to a vet for a thorough examination and a nutritional checkup. Perhaps she just needs some supplements. I assume you give her lots of hands-on affection, because more than anything else, dogs need this.

Yes, it is possible. Dogs can be fearful of thunder, loud voices, or certain other sounds. New situations, loss of another animal or person in their life can also be noticed in their behavior.

The dog you speak of would do well to be seen by the vet, and see what he recommends for the anxiousness.

Apparently, because Valium is used for stressed pets. Maybe there is some type of abuse in the home - does your aunt have kids that torture the dog?

This is obvious. Any brain can degenerate with exposure to toxic chemicals. That's in addition to any genetic deformities. All biological beings are subject to their genetics (birth) and environmental factors.
