we live in US, will be living in Canada for 1 1/2 yrs and then returning.

Not for that length of time. It is one thing to drive to Canada and spend a month as a tourist, especially if you go through several provinces. Then your US insurance is good. But if you stay in one province to live, after awhile you must have your vehicle registered and insured locally with local plates. I am being vague on actual times-frames and other details because it is different from Province to Province and you haven't included where you are going to live. But be prepared to have local plates around 2 months after moving.

Auto insurance is a lot more regulated than in the US. Some places you must be insured by the Provincially owned Auto Insurance company, in which case the answer would be no, there isn't such a US insurance company you can use.

you're insurance will cover you in Canada but go to you're agent and they will give you a separate certificate.
