is US money accepted in Canada?

I divide my time between the U.S. and Canada, and have income in both U.S. funds and Canadian funds. While I try to spend the U.S. currency in the U.S. and Canadian currency in Canada, there are many times I am not able to.

U.S. border towns (within 30 miles or so of the border) take Canadian currency, and most Canadian towns and cities within 75 miles of the border will take U.S. currency at most establishments.

If you are going further north than 50-75 miles north of the border, then you definitely want to exchange money beforehand at your local bank. Also, the bank will usually give you a better rate than most retailers.

An even better idea is to use your ATM or Debit card at ATM machines in Canada, you get the best exchange rate that way, and it is very handy. You can do that anywhere in Canada. You can also use your debit or credit card for purchases and services anywhere in Canada.

Don't be so defensive, Canadians. A lot of places do accept it, especially in bigger cities with lots of tourists, but it would be easier to convert it rather than hoping each store you go to will take it.

The coins are all the same size and American coins are often found in circulation in Canada, but they are accepted at 1:1 exchange, even at banks, so you lose out.

Certainly US money is accepted at most places in Canada, even though Canada is a sovereign country with its own money, known as the Canadian Dollar. Using US money in stores and restaurants however would likely result in a slightly inflated cost to you. The most economical approach is to change your US money to Canadian at a local bank.

Be sure to change your Canadian money back to American before you return to the States, because American stores aren't very accepting, at all, of Canadian money.

Yes, it is. US money is accepted worldwide. You would have an easier time if you used the newer bills with better security features. I would exchange it a bank so you get a better rate than at some smaller retailers. You could also you your debit card to pay for things.

Well in most places/stores it is accepted but its hard because american money is worth less or w.e than canadian money so its more of a challege to use US money.. so your just better off using canadian money.

But you know what i find funny... when i was in california i had a few pennies from canada left in my wallet and i accedently gave the cashier a canadian penny and he made me take it back! lol i was like what the heck =P

My neice travels to Canada often, and has to exchange currency before she plans on buying anything. Besides, the exchange rate varies so much that you might as well exchange US money for Canadian if you want to save yourself trouble.

Change money! We are an indepent country and have our own money. Yes people take US money but will give you a terrible rate of exchange. Could I use Mexican Pesos or Canadian Dollars in the US?

...most places - but i'd exchange it at a bank for a better rate...collect canadian quarters and use them in vending machines back in america...i remember bringing tons of swedish " pennies " back to canada and using them as subway tokens

it depends on the establsihment but why not convert at any bank......these questions confirm many Americans know nothing about Canada.

Yes it is and with US Dollar you can almost pay in every country in the world.
